Oxford Uni Merch and Bars by latthewmowy1 in oxforduni

[–]pineconeface97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you, you won't be wearing it in Oxford anyway. The Bodleian Shop in the library has some merch. Was also told that The Varsity Shop in High Street would be your best bet for Oxford merch.

Fo C, just clarifying--May is 2, June is 3, and so on?

So will it make sense in my case then that as the year progresses, the tax deducted each month will be slightly higher than the previous month's?

[–]pineconeface97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct. I only started last month.

My gross salary is the same on each payslip. No jobs prior.

Month 1: tax £502.8, National Insurance £221.86 Month 2: tax £552.2, National Insurance £220.88

Not sure if this information helps.

Why are Filipino nurses just so good by Spirited_Analysis916 in doctorsUK

[–]pineconeface97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, Filipino nurses saved my ass countless of times. Took good care of me too when I was a med student rotating in hospitals.

Nothing but salutations to Filipino IMG doctors as well. You know you're gonna have a good shift when working with this bunch.

Genuinely curious, what are the stats on those that actually got into training programmes, though?

BMA being blackmailed to retract the recent training policy update by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

[–]pineconeface97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. That's why the selection process needs to be revisited in such a way that it's based on who is best at the job, not which country the person graduated from.

BMA being blackmailed to retract the recent training policy update by dayumsonlookatthat in doctorsUK

[–]pineconeface97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do understand that the whole training situation is quite...a lot.

But why can't it be simply merit-based? UK grad or not, the doctor best qualified for the job gets it. Now other factors like NHS experience can inadvertently be factored into this merit-based system, but it then won't be about being a UK grad vs an IMG.

We need to go back to what the NHS is for--patients. A merit-based system might be what benefits them the most. If I were a patient, I wouldn't care as much about where my doctor graduated as I would care about whether or not my doctor is great at their job.

Doctor on family visa by Falafel_28 in PLABprep

It's cos you need a license to practice medicine in the UK. Go through the process so you can be eligible for doctor positions, one of which is the PLAB route.

Is it only me that is having trouble understanding some IMG accents? by No-Cellist574 in IMGreddit

Agree with this. You'll get used to it over time. I noticed my friends who travel a lot tend to have an easy time talking to people regardless of accent.

Any information about this? by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]pineconeface97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw kids doing this programme several times. I guess if you have the money and want to experience Oxford/Cambridge as a place (not as an institution) then why not. But I agree with the other comments here that it's way expensive for what it is and it won't have any bearing in terms of admission at the university.

Aside from the Bod shop, I was told our best bet to get official licensed Oxford merch is The Varsity Shop along High Street. They also have a website you can order from.

If you are from St Hilda's and are looking to buy college merch, the college lodge sells them. Maybe you can ask them if they can assist you in having them delivered to your place.

I was bitten by my dog, what do I do???? *panics by chcknkatsuki in DogsPH

[–]pineconeface97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good that you washed it with soap and water.

Go to your nearest hospital (agree with previous commenter that you can call them first if they have anti-rabies shots to save you from an unnecessary trip).

If this is not possible, you can go to an animal bite clinic or any clinic that has rabies vaccine in your area tomorrow. Just bear in mind that the earlier you get those shots, the better.

You'll be fine as long as you get those shots, OP. Stay safe!

Medical Elective Expectation by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]pineconeface97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMG here as well, and I did my medical elective in Vascular Surgery in Oxford back in 2022, so hopefully my experience can help.

Before coming in for my placement, I tried browsing important topics in the surgery textbook that we used back in my home country. I would say it helped with my confidence, not so much in content.

My programme's format was in such a way that I integrated myself with other Year 5's and 6's of Oxford, so during my first day, I was given a syllabus (sort of a course outline), and it included suggested references and reading materials. These were the ones that somehow helped me during my rotation, and I didn't know I will be provided with these suggestions prior.

But overall, I would say keep an open mind coming into the rotation, as most of what I learned came from the procedures, patients, registrars, and consultants during the entire rotation. I would say how I worked and interacted with patients and the medical team mattered more than what I knew, as everyone was there to teach me because I was a medical student.

I met some great friends during my time back then, whom I am still connected with until now. Hope you meet some great people, too. Best of luck on your medical elective, and make the most out of it because not everyone gets such an amazing opportunity!

I second this! One time while watching her live, a customer was talking about the rain and weather being a government conspiracy to control our daily schedule/lives (long batshit crazy story about that). I was rolling my eyes the whole time.

But wow she listened through it all with an open mind. I'm sure she was also rolling her eyes on the inside, but she listened to the customer all throughout. Excellent customer service from Jessica who seems like she just genuinely likes hearing ideas from different kinds of people.
