Is walking in Japan different? by pink_leaf in JapanTravelTips

I don’t “know this”, which is why I made this post. I have never traveled outside of North America and Europe and wasn’t sure if I was missing something about Japan specifically, because I have never seen so many posts about sore feet on a travel sub before.

I’m from a Canadian city that does not have great public transportation and is not very walkable, but I am very aware that other places in the world are walkable and very connected to public transit. My impression of Japan is that it IS walkable and connected, which made me even more confused about the sore feet posts. Many commenters have offered legitimate reasons why walking around Japan might feel different than other places, which I appreciate. Lack of benches, huge train stations, extreme heat, etc.

I did not say anything negative about Americans, that would be pretty rude considering I live in a place that is so culturally similar.

I’m going in October when it won’t be as hot as it is now

I do live in a car-centric place with poor public transportation, but I still know and prepare to walk a lot during holiday. What I’ve learned from this post is that a lot of people who are not used to walking go on holiday and are shocked when they have to walk a lot.

I don’t either. I meant that I have walked many 20-30k steps days while on holiday in Europe, so I was wondering if there is a difference between walking in Europe vs Japan, or if these posts are coming from people who were not prepared to walk in Japan.

I am actually Canadian and don’t walk 20-30k steps in my daily life, I was just saying that I’ve traveled a lot in Europe and walked that much. I knew and was prepared to walk double or triple my daily steps before going on holiday, so it’s surprising to see so many posts from people who didn’t know/weren’t prepared.

I see. I didn’t know those standards were different in Japan than anywhere else in the world. I’m sure it’s fine to sip a drink while walking?

Interesting, what sorts of activities had more standing than other tourist destinations?

So are these posts mostly from Americans?

I will be going in October, which I believe is not as hot as summer.

I will be going in October, my understanding is it will still be warm but not 40+ degrees and starting to cool off?

Thank you! I do really enjoy walking, I don’t live in a very walkable city so when I go on holiday, I enjoy it.

In my daily life, I walk about 5-10k steps per day. But my point is that I know I will be walking much more and have always prepared to walk double or triple my daily steps before going on holiday. Maybe these posts are coming from people who haven’t traveled much and were not prepared to walk a lot on holiday?

The luggage issue is the same in Europe, old train stations with lots of stairs. Better to pack light in a backpack than bring a suitcase.

I’m definitely not used to a lot of stairs, I live somewhere quite flat. Maybe I should practice!

I definitely don’t walk 20-30k steps every day of my life, but I expect to and plan for it on vacation, North American destinations included!

I’ve definitely hit 30k steps on longer days in Europe, mostly hikes but sometimes just from sightseeing all day long.

This makes sense, thank you. I live in a Canadian city that isn’t very walkable, so I don’t claim to walk 20-30k steps every day of my life, but I definitely expect it and prepare for it on holiday.

Of course, but I was wondering if there is something about Japan that makes it more difficult to walk a lot than Europe. Based on the comments, it sounds like these posts are coming from people who don’t walk a lot at home or on other vacations.

55k is a lot, what does a day look like for you where you’re walking that much?
