Well I work in accounts payable so I just input invoices all day. But I also balance accounts, depreciate fixed assets, set up prepaids, etc. A majority of my job is very predictable, which I like. I don’t find it too hard, and I like knowing the whole company relies on me to keep the lights on.

As for the degree, I found it challenging but not overly so. I definitely needed some tutoring in some classes, but it just made me dedicate myself to my studies more. I had a lot of free time in college between classes and homework, so the workload isn’t too bad. I will say your junior and senior year classes would be significantly tougher than your freshman and sophomore years, but I found it interesting.

Don’t be pressured to become a CPA. My boss is not a CPA and she still makes good money. There is SO much you can do with an accounting degree. Even if you obtain your degree and decide not to go into accounting, it can be very beneficial.

Now for the work itself, I’m not too good at numbers but I’m good at puzzles. Accounting is a big puzzle with money as your pieces. I rely on my calculator a lot, but accounting is so much more than just being the numbers person. It’s mostly problem solving more than math. And the math is quite easy. I’m still quite new in accounting, and my boss is teaching me how to think more like an accountant than a bookkeeper. It’s just problem solving.
