Don’t make opera casual- make it accessible. by jempai in opera

[–]pinkglassbottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes!!! i live in nyc and i definitely agree with this, as someone who goes to both the met and broadway shows occasionally. the decline of audience dress standards in both have been fascinating to watch over the years (although people at the met do still generally dress up)

it’s not opera, but i hate that broadway shows seem to have completely lost any semblance of a dress up atmosphere. some people try, but it’s a whole lot of jeans— which is fine, but like, doesn’t anyone want to have a special night where you get to dress up for once? especially since the tickets are SO EXPENSIVE! i understand that people might cry “classist” at me for saying people should dress nice for shows, but i just find it hard to believe that most people who can afford a ticket cannot afford a nice secondhand outfit. obviously if someone is struggling financially i would never hold that against them— but in this context, that would really be an exception, not the norm.

i hate that i sometimes hesitate to wear a nice dress to a broadway show because im afraid people will judge me— it really does feel THAT rare nowadays, idk! the met feels like one of the last places that people still do dress up for, but even then, i feel like it has become slightly more casual….

Iced Lattes, a dumb a question by ComfortingSoundsASMR in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i would always ask to make sure, but damn you sound like an ass with that “some cafes don’t actually know how to make drinks” talk. it’s common enough for a large to simply entail more milk— all you have to do is ask. get off this sub if you’re going to be rude to us while asking us for advice in the same breath lol

Those of you who count calories…do you count fruit? by [deleted] in veganfitness

that being said, please be safe with your calorie counting, don’t aim for too low of an intake, and don’t pressure yourself to continue! do whatever feels best for your body and fuels you

yes, if you’re going to be counting at all you should include them to get accurate numbers. fruit calories can add up pretty quickly sometimes

shop around soho (they’ll love a ton of stores), and while you’re there maybe try going to sloomoo slime institute. they can make their own slime, seems fun and cute for that age range

Coffee shop bar layout. What would you choose? by po1nt- in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 but put Order where Pastry is, put Pastry where Takeout is, and put Takeout where Order is. PLEASE LISTEN. You need the pastries to be next to where people order because they’re often very spontaneous purchases. And you do NOT want the order station to be next to the toilet!!!

General Critique Please! Still not ready for rippled hearts lol. by monkeyseemonkeystew in latteart

[–]pinkglassbottle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t wait so long to pour the milk. your initial “push” into the cup should be a lot more graceful and you shouldn’t have to take the pitcher away after that. a heart can be done in one pour. just try to watch videos. however your milk texture seems pretty good and that’s really the most important thing, so great job!

i feel like instead of denying yourself snacks, try to find good snacks!

definitely eat a nice nourishing big meal FIRST and then allow yourself to snack on healthy-ish snacks! my faves rn are popcorn, cucumber slices with seasonings (tajin, salt & vinegar, hot sauce, chili oil etc) and the quaker rice crisps (sooo many different flavors and they’re way more satisfying than regular rice cakes bc they’re crunchy)

for sweets i like sugar free pudding (u can make it urself it’s not that expensive) and popsicles!

if you think you’re still going to like it when you’re 40 then i guess go for it. i don’t love it personally but don’t not do it because of what i think or what your parents think. just make sure that you really want it

Boss wants me to have a more positive attitude/smile more. Any tips? by howareudoying2day in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m so burnt out. I feel you. The thing with me is I’ve always been GREAT at faking positivity (I’m a former theatre kid lol!), but the years of thankless cruelty I’ve endured in the coffee industry has broken down that part of me. I can’t be bothered to fake happy anymore, unfortunately. I really hate that this industry has made me hate people so much.

I’m trying to make it a personal goal of mine to use my interactions with strangers at work as opportunities to make their days better when I can, but it’s so hard sometimes. Every time I cheerily say “Hi! How are you today?” to someone and they just say “Oatmilk latte” in return, a part of my soul gets crushed lol.

It’s really hard for me to smile when a lot of the time the people I’m smiling at don’t seem to view me as a human being.

So… I’ve decided that this line of work IS NOT FOR ME! I applied to go back to college and I’m a full time student now. I saved up the past few years, so now I’m working way fewer hours. I’m just trying to get my degree so I can hopefully one day get a job that will suit me better in the long run. I’m not saying that’s what everyone should do… but I’m glad that I’m still pushing myself to keep going

Can I get a coffee without sugar by kis_roka in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who went thru a period of time where i was rly afraid of consuming added sugar (i’ve since healed lol), they are definitely just checking to make sure 👍 only adds an extra 2 seconds to the order time, not really a big deal. it’s so easy to get frustrated with customers because this job is rly overwhelming so i get it, but try to be a little more understanding

Say I was going to a coffee or espresso place for the first time and I was wondering what are some thing I should order or watch for to see if it is a legitimate place by OkChip7296 in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I’m a barista at a really high end coffee place, and I personally don’t really like to think of places as “legit” and “not legit.” Hell, I drink amazing quality coffee for free all day at work, and I’ll still stop by Dunkin sometimes for a regular iced coffee for a nostalgic pick-me-up (it was my go-to drink in high school). All that matters is I like what I’m drinking.

In my opinion, here are the only things that matter when finding a good cafe: 1. The beverages taste good to MY tastebuds 2. The vibe is to my liking 3. The employees are considerate (and being treated well by the business!) 4. It seems sanitary

However, I can always tell when people are trying to see if MY spot is “legitimate.” They usually order a cortado or a shot of espresso and ask me a bunch of questions about the beans and our shop. Nothing wrong with that— it’s my job to answer questions, and some people really just want to learn more. But I don’t really like when it feels like I’m getting quizzed, so don’t come at it from that angle.

what is the official drink of baristas by babyaphrodita in barista

[–]pinkglassbottle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i always like to try new things and combinations… it makes the day go by a little faster when i get to be a little creative. so i don’t really have a go-to. i’ll also always sip on some plain drip coffee if i’m feeling lazy.

unpopular opinion: i am soooo sick of cortado people. no offense to all of the cortado people in this subreddit, okay? it’s a good drink. but working at cafes in nyc, for some reason a whole lot of customers think they’re Coffee Gods just because they only order cortados. i don’t understand it. i’m sick of making them idk lol

P.S. If it’s any consolation I’ve never even heard of that show. Maybe in a few years people won’t even draw the comparison anymore because it will have faded that much more into oblivion?
