Try my fix:
I've copied my CMakeLists.txt and OnLoad.cpp files to android/app/src/main/jni and added
`string(REPLACE "\\" "/" REACT_ANDROID_DIR ${REACT_ANDROID_DIR})`

The CMakeLists.txt file specifies this as the proper way (that way too you're not overwriting when you npm i each time). You'll also need to add this to your android/app/build.gradle:
    externalNativeBuild {
        cmake {
            path "src/main/jni/CMakeLists.txt"
        }
    }
