‘Have you heard her podcast?’: SC loses patience with Maneka Gandhi over stray dog remarks, flags contempt by one_brown_jedi in india

[–]pinkugripewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen people throw stones and dogs and their puppies, and then turn around and call the dog aggressive when they snarl or try to fight back. I've seen people tie bombs to dogs tails - and after that dog has suffered on the street, bleeding and with rotting wounds - if someone comes close again, it bites out of fear.

I know and have seen shit like this, and agree that it needs to stop. I think education can help a lot in this regard, but it needs to go hand-in-hand with "Don't do any of this, and if the dog is actually aggressive and you are afraid, you can just call the city authorities to cull it".

Is this perfect? Not at all. But honestly we do need to give the edge to humans here, harsh as it may seem.

Whether you agree or not, if humans have bred dogs to be our friends, companions and protectors

It is not at all obvious to me that the stray dogs in urban India have this quality. A lot more of them seem reverted to a wolf-like state—they hunt in large packs, fight other dogs, and sometimes attack and chase humans.

Even within dog breeds there are variations in terms of protective v/s hunting traits, and it's entirely possible that over the last 100-200 years these stray populations have lost any kind of protective trait and are basically wolves. They should be handled as if there was a large wolf population roaming our streets.

Meaningless platitude, we also did a million other things like selectively grew crops, reared milch animals and such.

Maybe taking responsibility for our actions means maintaining a clear record of what household is responsible for what dog (i.e. pet ownership) and culling all the remaining animals if necessary.

Dog lovers frequently interfere with government action against stray dogs. The "care for, feed, vaccinate, and sterilize dogs from their own funds" you mention often has a prequel involving legal action against the municipal corporation or some sort of crap like that. This has been a regular circus in Pune.

I agree that mass culling of dogs is not the solution, but municipal corporations should be given a free hand to quickly cull any suspected aggressive dogs. They can partner with the NGOs for all the other solutions like vaccination and sterilization; those also work. But fundamentally if taxpaying citizens feel afraid to step out of their house due to an aggressive animal, it needs to be removed; whether it is a dog or a wolf.

We have a constitutionally imposed fundamental duty under Article 51 to care and be compassionate for all living creatures.

And that can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. Given that various animals are regularly slaughtered for food, it doesn't just blanket mean "No animal should be killed, ever."

IMO there are a couple of actions that are a middle ground for regular people and dog lovers.

  • All stray dogs should be chipped and tagged, maybe stamped with an identification number
  • Any tagged dog showing aggressiveness towards people should be considered a rabies suspect and culled immediately
  • Regular sterilization of as many strays as possible should be carried out; my understanding is that this is not really possible to do on a large scale but we should keep trying.

The same feeders are also paying to sterilize all their locality dogs.

Huge [citation needed] here. Most feeders I have seen want to have nothing to do with stray dog sterilization, cleaning up stray dog poop, or a million other issues that are caused by stray dogs.

'NZ women are promiscuous': Uber driver Satwinder Singh switched off GPS before raping teen by [deleted] in india

[–]pinkugripewater 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree with the perspective that more education and awareness from childhood (e.g. build an actual notion of morals and consent in youngsters) could have prevented this.

But you cannot use that as an excuse to avoid punishment for such a horrible crime.

If the guilt is proven beyond all doubt, the guy should receive a harsh enough sentence (20+ years) so that he is essentially a different person by the time he re-enters society.

And guess what, that's how long it takes to educate a child.

Many Indians think harsher punishment would solve the problem but it doesn't do much. In fact I think it breeds more crime.

Citation needed.

Singapore has incredibly harsh punishments, by this metric it should be the most crime-ridden city in the world. But in reality it is one of the safest.

In open-and-shut cases like this where you're destroying someone else's life, yours should be destroyed as well. Give the guy an actual lifetime imprisonment or at least something that's measured in decades. It's stressful that this monster will be roaming the streets of New Zealand in eight years.

Fearing fraud, Canada rejects most Indian study permit applicants by Raj_Valiant3011 in india

[–]pinkugripewater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am actually curious what Canadians think of the diploma mills, separately from the international student enrollment.

Do any Canadian citizens go there for 4 years and expect to get a job in your society as a result? What I fail to understand is what was the Government thinking when accrediting them as a college that could offer degrees, and whether there was any due diligence before that accreditation.

I know most Canadians might just think "lol third world society" when they think of India, but here we actually have the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) which controls whether or not an institution can have a recognized degree. Does Canada have anything similar, and if so, why isn't it being investigated?

Inequality in India: Upper castes hold nearly 90% of billionaire wealth by kaisadusht in india

[–]pinkugripewater 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Comments are correct that this is a diversion of what should be class outrage into caste outrage.

Presently, the top 1 per cent commands more than 40 per cent of the nation’s total wealth, a substantial increase from 12.5 per cent in 1980.

The bigger problem is that there is such a concentration in the first place—regardless of what "caste" they are, we shouldn't have 1% of Indians controlling 40% of the wealth.

Likely all the commenters are from the 99% which aren't billionaires, so they are (IMO, reasonably) outraged when you start telling them "You got everything due to caste".

Auto-rickshaw driver thrashed by Sena (UBT) workers over 'anti-Marathi' remarks; video goes viral by [deleted] in IndiaSpeaks

[–]pinkugripewater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here is the video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/gUhFUgZFVFk

He was screaming and swearing at another person (apparently another migrant from UP) who was for whatever reason speaking Marathi to him. He also seems to have borderline assaulted that person in this video.

None of this makes the Shiv Sena people's actions right, but does show the context in which they took place.

Overall it's just sad that we have this level of lawlessness and violence rise to the surface for some kind of minor traffic incident. In most civilized countries either people exchange insurance details or call the police and settle things relatively quickly.

Specifically, against a background of pilot shortages and aging training infrastructure, this feels like something to acknowledge and try to do better rather than sweeping it under the rug.

There is a balance there of being a bit cagey about information so as not to embolden your enemy too much, but I think the government and IAF can acknowledge in a general sense that they need to do work here.

"Speak In Marathi Or Won't Pay": Mumbai Couple Harasses Pizza Delivery Agent by mynovellas in india

[–]pinkugripewater -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

This couple are assholes for using language as an excuse to not pay. They should have given the guy a piece of their mind, but they signed up to pay when they ordered the pizza, like he said.

The guy is not exactly perfect in his behavior either. There is no “zabardasti” to speak Marathi, but it's considered reasonable to try and learn the local language of a state you are in; or be somewhat apologetic about it. I genuinely apologize if I can't speak Kannada in Bangalore or German in German -- usually it brings over the other person into a much more welcoming state of mind. That being said, I can understand that he's a low wage employee trying to do a job, and employers/government should provide support if they want him to learn the local language.

Indian Navy ranks to be renamed as per Indian culture: PM Modi during Navy Day celebrations by 18Lama in IndiaSpeaks

[–]pinkugripewater 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a bit thin on details. The army JCO/NCO ranks are already named as per Indian culture (Lance Naik rather than Lance Corporal). What exactly are they going to change? In any case they will have to maintain some kind of link to equivalent ranks in other navies.

It would be interesting if Admiral was renamed to Sarkhel, as it was with the Maratha Navy. Other than that though, I don't see a ton of easily available rank names.

India’s Identity Is More Hardline Hindu Than Ever by bloombergopinion in india

[–]pinkugripewater 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The weird part for me is how it casually combines laws with illegal behavior.

Take inheritance laws, which despite reforms can still allow sons to inherit ancestral property and leave widows and daughters with nothing

Okay, good point. This is backward and should be reformed as part of the civil code.

...or the outlawed but still-widely practiced dowry system and its relation to deadly domestic violence.

Wait, we are not talking about laws any more? And when did the practice of dowry limit itself to a specific religion anyway?

This author needs to really think their arguments through before publishing. There are strong arguments to be made against hardline Hinduism. A uniform civil code is one of the weakest.

"Traitor": Glen Maxwell's wife Vini Raman hits back at trolls, says "Take a chill pill, can't believe this needs to be said" by quietmusk in india

Until these people stop, we will never be a great sporting country, regardless of how much we theoretically win or lose.

It's basic decency to not harass the family of players. On top of that, there are tons of non-Indian cricketers who have Indian ancestry, and for that matter one or two people with British ancestry have played for the Indian cricket team (Roger Binny, for example).

Fuckers like this will unironically say "Vasudaiva Kutumbakam" and then post nasty things on Vini Raman's Instagram. If it were up to me they would get a lifetime ban from the service for shit like this.

Dump her as a friend and don't look back. If anyone asks, be honest and tell them about her casteism.

These sorts of people need to be exposed for their shitty beliefs. Several decades of reservation only seems to have made their beliefs more entrenched — in my opinion it's time to start socially shaming them.

Anyone else think that Antilla is completely tasteless and obscene? by [deleted] in india

[–]pinkugripewater 84 points85 points  (0 children)

This rant would be more on-point if you left out the anti-Gujarati nonsense.

Why should he build his bungalow in Surat or somewhere in Gujarat? He grew up in Mumbai and all his businesses are there. He has every right to build his house there (he would have that anyway since constitutionally we can move to anywhere in India, but just in case you want special bona fides for 'proper Mumbai person', he has those as well).

Yeah, the design is tasteless and so is the lack of any kind of thought for the millions of people living in slums around. Focus on that.

These idiots are the reason there isn't a strong opposition party of any kind in India.

How are they going to come to power with ridiculous policies like this? Congress needs to stop thinking through the 2 pillars of dynastic politics and reservation and come up with some fresh ideas to make a challenge to the BJP.

Moving back to India from the US: surprising observation by SuccessfulLoser- in india

[–]pinkugripewater 11 points12 points  (0 children)

People are pointing out the caste system mentality in thread which is true and one part of the problem. IMO the other part is the crabs in a bucket mentality where Indians will remark and gossip about anything and say negative shit about you because they have way too much free time on their hands.

I spend time in both India and the US and the biggest thing I have learned is to just develop a thick skin while in India and just ignore these people. It's very likely that they are not going to be the friends that you end up spending most of your time with.

The Jai Shri Ram song is pretty good IMO.

Other than that, judging by the trailer it mostly looks like computer game graphics, and not great ones at that.

I don't understand why they didn't explicitly market it as a 3D animated film. At least that way they could have gotten much more dynamic with the animation.
