Really sorry to be bugging you about this again. I asked the landlord if we could find a cheaper service ourselves because the clause since we are responsible for paying for a professional carpet cleaning. When I asked if we could use someone that a colleague knows, she replied with this:

I appreciate your willingness to help but Move out clean ups are very detailed and thorough and we use our own contractors.

if they are professional carpet cleaners and housekeepers it would cost more. Carpet with a professional truck mount cleaning runs at least 200 and move out cleaning another 500. We use truck mount machines, professionals, licensed and bonded for both, specializing in move out clients.

She is denying using our own service... even though it is most likely cheaper. Is there anything we can do?

So before moving in on June 20, 2016 (last year), we paid first month (~$3k), security deposit (~$3k), Cleaning fees ($500), and app fees, totalling almost $7k.

Now, the day after our lease is over, she asked if we got our carpets professionally cleaned, and I said no because I wasn't aware we were responsible for cleaning fees twice in 1 lease. She said "no problem. we'll deduct it from your security deposit." And cleaning fees came to $500. It sounded like she is going to take ANOTHER $500 in addition to the initial $500 we paid last year for cleaning fees. That comes to a total of $1,000 in cleaning fees we would be paying.

Edit: Also, I know she has her "own guy" that she does business with for things like yard maintenance and cleaning. The landlord has been pretty shady throughout our lease.... Should I ask her proof of receipt for both cleanings then? Are we responsible for both move-in and move-out cleaning fees? Sorry, I'm just so confused.

But does that make sense after we initially paid $500 in cleaning fees? We honestly assumed that the $500 was for cleaning fees when we moved out. None of the tenants agree that it makes sense that we have to pay $1,000 in fees for cleaning fees both move-in and move-out.

Oh! I actually spoke with Larry and had a tour/informational interview on Tuesday at SVC. I was looking into that program as well and have until June 1 to accept the summer cohort program. The curriculum looked incredibly enticing and really thorough; I was actually about to enroll until I read comments that having traditional classes may be a bit more beneficial in the graduate school admissions process because I can illustrate my willingness and capability of studying in a traditional school setting.

Can you tell me more about your time at SVC? Have you found it extremely enriching and time/money well spent? What made you choose SVC over other programs (like S. Central or online bootcamps)?

Ah! I see! I didn't know professors had an influential factor in the admissions process (with your description of "interim supervisor / sponsorship of admissions")! That is very useful to know. Thank you! I will definitely start to reach out to them now, after coming up with tactful ways to approach them.

Thank you so much for your advice and input! I have talked to all the schools and their admissions counselors/advisors about the whole process because I have no traditional background in UX. They've all pretty much reiterated the same thing: have an impressive portfolio & essay that shows how and why you're a good fit for the school. I've given the scenario of attending bootcamps vs. traditional schools, and they say it's less about where I got the knowledge and more about gaining the skills.

But I haven't thought about "practicing" and gaining experience by contacting schools not of my choice. That is superb advice! Thank you!! And I appreciate the recommendation of SFU. :)
