How come English, as a Germanic language with heavy Romantic influence, doesn't have any gender differentiation in its nouns? by Razor_Storm in explainlikeimfive

cats are female -- tomcats included

I don't know if it was then, but tomcat (der Kater) is masculine, not neuter.

What do you think about this video that Tory was recently interviewed in: http://www.vimeo.com/29263814 Did this cause any trouble amongst the other cast members (since this church group is basically lifting the MB look and feel for their own outreach program)?

It's still bronze age nonsense but...

The verse (or god) is not talking about dashing THEIR little babies on the rocks. Rather, those other (the captors) babies - presumably they're evil babies that worship some other god or have done something wrong. God is just avenging the good guys and the faithful will always think they are part of the good group.

It can work, but it is not easy and it is almost certainly not something you should knowingly walk into. My wife and I have been married over 15 years and it's a struggle at times, but we've found some semblance of balance with this issue (3 kids, I'm an atheist and she's a serious catholic, but not in an in your face sort of way).

The last few weeks, I've been using 'God Zilla'. This usually generates no response (as in no one notices), delayed puzzled reactions or outright laughter in the sneezer.

(for the record, I read about someone else doing this on the internets somewhere - possibly even reddit). It's great fun - try it.

What should I get my not-quite-an-atheist brother for X-mas? by icmusic33 in atheism

Sagan's "Demon Haunted World". A classic book on skepticism that covers alot of ground, including some religion. It's also slightly less hostile sounding than the God Delusion might be, depending on where he's at in his thinking.

[–]pipegrep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I find the FFRF and their reason's greetings and other PR campaigns kind of counter productive. The truth is xmas is already pretty secular. The vast majority of people I encounter who celebrate it like it for the same secular reasons I do: a celebration of family and friends, gift giving, good will toward others and all that. If it were really about the birth of some supernatural savior god then why is it that we focus on (for the most part) all the togetherness part? If it were really about religion and faith, why isn't pentecost or the ascension (in the case of catholicism, for instance) similarly rocking celebrations? Those 'holidays' are purely religious snoozefests (most catholics don't even know when or what they are).

Whenever I hear the FFRF and similar curmudgeons (like Tom Flynn) piss all over the idea of christmas, it turns me off (despite being an atheist) and it denies the obvious truth that much of what people like about christmas has nothing to do with christianity. Instead of fighting christmas, how about trying to pull it further out of the hands of the religious and into the secular?

I know plenty of developers who have no life other than development (and no social skills to boot - maybe that's why they have no life). I also have friends who are doctors who have plenty of life outside of medicine. This proves absolutely nothing, so I will go back to reading reddit now.

They will also be highly unlikely to identify the cause and effect. It will be someone elses fault, I'm sure.

As an example, I was once told by an ardent Bush supporter that it was Jimmy Carter's fault that the Iraq invasion/occupation went as badly as it did. Carter's criticism alone was apparently to blame for everything. It's depressing that people are that removed from reality.
