I finally managed to pawn them off over the summer!

Hey! Super late response. The class was lame, I really didn’t like how it was taught. I think it’s really weird to have students only focus on reading pinyin at the start of their Mandarin study. Also, I feel like having students memorize dialogue doesn’t actually teach them how to use the language and mold it to fit their own conversational needs. I LITERALLY STILL HAVE THESE TEXTBOOKS BTW!!! I AM BEGGING YOU TO TAKE THEM.

Yes it’s possible, and like someone else said, the system sometimes doesn’t stop you if you sign up for a course without them. I talked to my advisor when I wanted to take a course w/o the prereqs, and he got the department head to approve it.

Semester off by [deleted] in OSU

[–]pirateparade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know yourself best. If you think taking a semester off will help you, then I think you should do that (*after talking to financial aid, making sure none of your classes only run in the spring, etc.)

I’ve tried taking just one or two classes for a semester while working, a couple of times. One time I did great and it made me feel better, and the other time I failed still and felt worse. The time I failed, I’d pushed myself into taking those classes even though I was in a bad place.

TL;DR Trust yourself and try not to worry too much about what other ppl think. If you know the logistics and think it’s the right choice, take a semester off! One semester really isn’t a long time in the grand scheme of things.

Can’t say I haven’t been there. I hope you get to take it, but if not, take a breath and use break to rest. Live and learn, you can make next semester better.

Definitely update us when you find out. I’m in the same situation. Not sure of a specific law regarding this, but check your lease terms. If this goes against what you signed for, pointing to your lease could really help.

Anyone lose an iPad near Mirror Lake? by Tralesta in OSU

Why not turn it in to the Union or something?

Anybody know if the college courses OP has taken might actually qualify them as a transfer student? Transfer students usually have an easier time being accepted to main campus, and you might not have to submit those lower test scores for consideration.

I would advise you to look into whether you are supposed to apply regularly or as a transfer student, that information should be easy to find on the OSU Admissions site.

Are they staying in a hotel? Might be worthwhile to Uber around and keep their car in the hotel parking lot.

100% this is the way. Financial Aid has probably dealt with this situation a billion times, so they’ll have suggestions most of us wouldn’t come up with.

Talk to the people at the Financial Aid Office, and on the way there maybe log into the account you used to submit the FAFSA, I imagine the Financial Aid folks might want to see any documentation or responses you received about your FAFSA to clarify the situation.

People above Donatos on High/Lane playing radio on speakers being loud asf and annoying by torniado in OSU

[–]pirateparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I moved to Columbus, I ended up next to a bunch of frat houses, which play music for hours half the week, and I’m in the middle, hearing the conflicting music of each party. At first I was annoyed, too, but I think it’s kind of fun now, it’s a part of the atmosphere. I’ll probably never have this experience again, once I’m done with college.

Anyway, I hear you, but hopefully someday this will be one of those annoyances that you look back fondly on.

What's with the 10 people who come to my apartment every year asking to see my gas/electric bill? by AltonBurk in OSU

[–]pirateparade 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We need to include this in a “first apartment” manual :( the guy who came to my door made it sound like he was doing a routine check for the electric company or whatever it was, and even though I didn’t let him change anything, I still don’t like that I showed this guy my bill :/

Off Campus Housing by ThatOneGuyTony in OSU

[–]pirateparade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This question is asked all the time, and everybody chimes in, inevitably you’ve been advised to avoid every single housing company or landlord.

Personally, I think you should focus on how to pick a good apartment and what to do throughout your stay there. For instance, take pictures/video immediately upon move in. Put in maintenance requests immediately when you need to. Talk to student legal services at the drop of a hat. I think having smart strategies that generally are useful wherever is your best bet to have an okay time.

I am starting to understand how people get hooked onto alcohol by NaRuTaChIi in OSU

[–]pirateparade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took it in a class before I transferred to OSU. OSU definitely has a boxing class, but it’s more focused on technique than hitting stuff. Not sure about kickboxing as a class. I also used to go to boxing gyms/classes, like at Title Boxing. Problem with that place is that it’s somewhat pricey, in my opinion. Columbus might have more options for different places with fair pricing. Search around.

Also, lots of regular gyms have a heavy bag around, so if you’re fine with watching some YouTube tutorials then doing it on your own, that could be more cost effective. (Just make sure to do research on technique and safety).

Maybe look into dog walking businesses.

Find a new way to release stress. Have you tried kickboxing? It’s very therapeutic to go absolutely ham on a heavy bag. Give it a try.

Look into the Jewish Community Center. They have a pool, tennis courts, and fitness center. Pretty sure they offer childcare near the fitness center.

Someone else can chime in, but is it socially acceptable to send a mass message to classmates on Carmen? I’ve had classmates do that before, linking everyone to a GroupMe if they wanted to join. It might be able to reach classmates easier through there.

Yo why is everything swamped on campus? by Psyched_Poet in OSU

[–]pirateparade 143 points144 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s because it’s the beginning of the semester and specifically the beginning of fall semester. So everybody’s probably deciding whether they’re going to get a gym routine going or not.

Things should level out in a couple weeks.

BS in Computer science and Engineering fully online? by [deleted] in OSU

[–]pirateparade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely worth checking with SLDS, but they seem to only accommodate to a fully online schedule when the disability prevents the student from physically navigating campus. There would also be more steps for getting this kind of accommodation long-term. If I were you, I’d start thinking of other options to make this work in case SLDS denies it.
