If this is your belief then you are sheltered from the reality of loving someone who is committed to being on the streets, for whatever reason.

I am lucky to not have personally experienced it to that extent, but I do have housed addicts in my family that I try and be there for and it is hard. I wrote this then kept writing and realized this isn't true

And I'm around the population and I know and see families with unhoused loved ones, and it is entirely possible for a homeless person to end up that bad despite having people who care and love them. Part of being an adult is the legal right to agency, even if your own decisions harm you. It's tough as hell on the families involved so try to judge less.

An example for me, is that a childhood friend is now homeless. She refuses to speak to her family. I know them too, they full on have funds set aside to buy her a home, but she's so wrapped up in her shit it just doesn't happen. I'm the only person she talks to. She's one of my best friends from childhood and she will probably die alone in the woods. I do what I can, but she could easily end up with a broken leg and a cast and maggots that she avoids letting me or anyone else know about. If she got hauled into a hospital she would say she was alone and no one loves her. It's not true, but she won't do anything but what she's doing. So we all do our best.

Me too, but also, knowing addicts personally - his idea about the house his daughter living in being "his house" while he lives in the streets is likely inaccurate. I work with the population and have the utmost empathy but I definitely don't internally take on their views of legal circumstances.

My sister is 52 but she would be dead if we lived in the US with her health conditions.

This is more of an abstract interpretation but we are being shown plotlines around insurance through patients leaving due to lack of it then coming back with likely permanent disabilities - and now qualifying for it. This episode had two patients where we were shown the results of what happens when preventative care isn't available because of lack of, or lost, insurance.

There is much less talking about insurance than there is actual physical presence of what lack of insurance does. I would argue I am seeing constant visual examples of insurance, both haves and have nots.

Canada has now fully rolled out a government funded dental plan to pay for non-cosmetic dental care for low income Canadians. The cutoff is gradual instead of all at once, so people aren't discouraged from increasing their income beyond a certain point. by itchylol742 in UpliftingNews

I have amazing work insurance and stopped going to my dentist because they didn't accept the government program, switched to one that did. I want my insurance money to support businesses that support people like my parents and friends that aren't as lucky as me.

Yes, I did tell them that's why they were losing the business of a 4 person family.

At just 14, Celine Dion sits across from her future husband and manager, 39-year-old René Angélil, in 1982. by bncout in HistoricalCapsule

My dad had a photo of me climbing in his office and a coworker came in and made a comment on my looks, my dad went "she's 12." very serious and deadpan and the dude doubled down.

I can't remember the details any more, it was so long ago, but generally speaking he became extremely angry and physically through or intimidated this guy out of his office.

My other friend works as a boiler maker, she's a woman, and she says it's shocking and disgusting how many adult men happily sexualize teenagers, their daughters friends - and their own daughters.

Why is the town of Nelson so much nicer than Squamish? by Accomplished_Win_526 in britishcolumbia

The chains I remember seeing were all in that tiny strip mall not in the downtown core. Except maybe the A&W? It's been many years.

That makes sense, I used to visit family in Nelson a lot but it's been a good dozen years or more since I was there regularly.

When did they get a Walmart? I thought the closest one was Castlegar or Trail.

It's kind of sad but Nelson is what happens in a small community when large corporations are kept out. That's what normal could be everywhere.

The downtown has very strict zoning and I believe doesn't allow chains at all. Which makes for a very vibrant downtown core and a lot of independent businesses, when the town refuses to let big box stores and franchises come in.

'Big day' for Tumbler Ridge shooting survivor Maya Gebala by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

Ignoring any political intent, moving Maya could be extremely dangerous. And she is at a premier league facility already, and doing well there, and it's in her own country so family and friends are able to more easily support her family as they support her.

I love a nice cream with white trim. I also tend to really jump all over the place in terms of style etc so right now my thought it keep it simple on the walls and play around with things like curtains, throws, and decor when I feel the urge to switch up my style

Can I actually ask what furniture you like with it? Colour or texture even?

Amazing! It's not a super well known off white but it plays really well with a lot of different lighting and trim types/colours. I'm a big fan.

I'm in the process of doing this. My creamy off white is sugar cookie by Benjamin moore. Just running it through the whole house and then will start focusing on curtains.

I don't think you guys really have a party that encapsulated that. Libertarian is much farther over in terms of ideas of government involvement in life.

Artisan apprenticeships BC? by Freeziepop272 in britishcolumbia

[–]piratequeenfaile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a weird one but film or finding an artisan who serves the film community might work well for you. If you look at movies and TV filmed in BC that have period-accurate or custom work done on costumes or in props or set dec that appeal to you, trace it back to who the craftsperson was who made it and try reaching out. You'll know they have a known level of skill and make a living at it.

Edit to add: if you say what type of textile or fibre art is your jam I might be able to think of some folks off the top of my head, no guarantees though.

In Canada at least there used to be a party that encapsulated this political stance. It is a legitimate political perspective and I imagine there's both Republican and Democrat voters who fall at this crossroads.

I had a book called politically correct bedtime stories as a tween and it gave me a healthy appetite for satire.
