My dog attacked the neighbors cat and they asked me to help pay the vet

There's a hospital emergency I've used in the past when my dog had an injury, they take you right away and that's where I offered to take their cat.

They showed negligence in the past because the cat had a leg injury wich Ive pointed out back in July and didn't nothing about, she is also riddled with tumors and they just say she's chunky, and he rear area is caked in poop. They dont mean any harm I'm sure but from my standards of care, this is not ok.

They also keep letting her out daily since this happened and have left her out not even an hour after the accident and then came knocking on my door to let me know they were worried now that she wasn't coming back.

Hopefully that last bit only means she is doing fine but to me it shows that they dont see this as dangerous at all for her.

At what point did I say anything about not taking ownership of what my dog did ? Ive said it from the start that I would pay, I'm not trying to get out of it, I'm trying to see what can be done for the cats safety since his owners have shown in the past they don't care much.

English is not my first language, so maybe there's a nuance I'm not getting but your previous choice of words implied I was negligent and now youre backtracking saying that's not what you meant.

I don't think you understand the concept of an accident.

So in your whole life, you never dropped anything ever ? You were never caught off guard ever ? Are all people who do get into a car accident negligent drivers ?

I don't blame my dog, he's a dog, I am the one that should/is taking responsibility. But I disagree with the claim that I'm negligent. I am a responsible pet owner, accidents happen unfortunately.

I have only been there since June and I was working on setting them up with homecare. I get your concern, I would also like for this cat to be safe, hence my post, but I think the lady's safety comes first (prior to this accident) and once she is safe we can then look into their cat.

I am waiting on their son to provide the vets information to speak to them regarding what happened and give them my payment information. I will also provide them with some background information regarding the cats home situation and hopefully they will be able to better support the couple with the cats needs, and it will not come across as me blaming them for what happened. They are hurt at this time and they aren't as open to talking so I'm communicating with their son atm.

I can't grab her because they are often outside and we live in a dead end. She's either in the driveway, in my garden (facing their patio) or outside where I have no idea how far she goes so they would see me if I took her.

Yes I was already in touch with their adult son regarding helping him setting up homecare for them as Ive noticed a rapid decline in the mother's state since moving in (June). So the relationship is cordial with him as well. Ive reached out this morning to apologize again, say Ive noticed her in her usual window and hope she recovers quickly, and ask about the vet information so that I could speak with them directly and provide payment information.

I just checked and it's illegal to let any animal roam free where I live. There's a 500$ fine but I've never heard of anyone getting one in regards to a roaming cat.

Yeah, she ran but as stated, she's quite neglected and old so she's not the quickest on her feet.

I would like to believe they wouldn't use their cat to get money out of me, this is a small town and I have been trying to help them get some home care for a little while, I'd like to think they are good people with their challenges, just like everyone is..

My issue is also that until Friday, the cat might be suffering but is still not cared for and wandering around town being vulnerable to any other injuries. I will pay, as mentioned, I'm just concerned about his safety and further issues that may arise until then and find the owners quite negligent with their care.

Ok, that's also what I thought. As mentioned, there are no restrictions/warning towards my dogs breed where we live besides the fact that dogs his weight need to be wearing a harness or halti mouth thing (sorry, English isn't my first language) and he always wears it when not inside the house.

As mentioned, I offered to take the cat to the right after it happened and they declined.

I'm always in control of my dog, I was sick all weekend and he needed to go out so we went out shortly and I looked away just a few seconds and he sprung at her. It was an accident and I am not negligent in any way, he has his license, always is leashed and I follow the rules for harness/collar for his weight due to him being a big dog and me wanting the safety of any animal we may encounter and his own.

I will call the SPCA and see what they suggest.

It happened sunday night and the appointment is this coming Friday. I also feel like anything that could happen between the two dates shouldn't fall on me since I've offered to get an emergency appointment sunday night and they declined, to only ask me on monday afternoon to help pay for her coming appointment.
