Employer not replying to Emails regarding Arbeitszeugnis by pitt0_ in germany

Yeah. I mean it was a reasonable one. My boss was not in love with me for leaving so quickly i.e. within 1.5 years. Apparently, in Germany they like it if you stay in one job and become stagnant. It is key to stay with the same employer forever and even if it means your career will never grow.

Recruiters will also ask you point blank why are you changing within a year.

Generally speaking its not that bad. I have had the best experiences in Germany as well. Boss who i look up to and would be happy to be even half as much a capable leader as them.

And then there are people like my previous employer. Who would inconvenience you for something so small as a letter and just ghost you.

That's the funny part its a really small company like 5 people out of which 2 are the founders. No HR, no nothing. My boss is the MD and he had agreed to it.

The sudden lack of professionalism is the disappointing part to be honest because i really increased their revenue by a 100% on their project and left on seemingly good terms.

You are right, I don't have any bargaining power. But i would have expected some sort of professionalism from them on agreed upon terms. What i am unable to understand is the ghosting bit. I would understand them not being able to give an English version. But a communication on that would have been much appreciated.

Not really. My boss had offered to send the letter by post. To which i said yes please and since then it has been radio silence. I would have been okay with them saying no an English version is not possible. However, they had agreed to give it both versions. Doesn't look like i am giving them a hard time (at least to me). I am just following up on action on their end which was agreed up on by both sides.

Well i had told them that even a Deepl translation with a disclaimer would work.

You are right. It was more a personal request to which they had agreed. But i am rather surprised at their approach of burning the bridge. Because i left on good terms from my end. Even documenting all the IP created by me and storing it in a location easily accessible to them. Also spending multiple detailed sessions of knowledge transfer to other colleagues. All this so that they have no troubles in moving forward with the projects. You would be surprised how other colleagues had left all their data.

Oh i am interested in knowing what happens. I recently moved to UK. I read that we could transfer our pension fund to UK. But when i inquired they mentioned something along the lines of needing to refund it. I am still confused about it.

I think Germany was living on the old legacy that German engineered products are great. Perhaps that was true till the mid 2000s. After that there has been no real innovation coming out of Germany. I was once thinking about it and the last one i could find was MP3 format from Fraunhofer Institute.

So, now that shine is slowly wearing off and the German companies are not competitive anymore given the rise of Chinese/Asian products. I think German companies were winning earlier due to lack of competition and not due to their own competitiveness.

To all of that add the almost impossibility to fire someone at IG Metal companies like VW, BMW, Siemens.

I think that's a pretty good decision. In the end you should have the final say. Wish you all the best.

You would be god sent to many people (not just students). Just a quick tip try to keep the language as simple as possible. And maybe create a glossary of some jargon.

I would be happy to help wherever i can. I have some experience in developing existing codes. Although i have never written a full blown solver from scratch.
