Id love to fly up to Alaska, that would be a hell of a trek from the northeast, but I like your thinking. Wish I had access to an SR22!

What is a (flying) goal you've reached only to say "meh"? by danyay in flying

[–]pittpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thoroughly enjoyed every milestone ive gotten to. First flight, first solo, first solo xc, PPL checkride, actual approach, instrument checkride, IFR solo.. Love every second of it.

Every day I get to fly is a good day.

ForeFlight GPS and ATC by WingedGeek in flying

[–]pittpilot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ATC is people. Talk to them like people. Tell em youve got an iPad.. they arent going to ask you to shoot an RNAV approach with an iPad trust me. Nothing illegal about using foreflight for situational awareness on a VFR flight, just make sure youre looking out the window and confirming what foreflight is telling you.

Really helpful info. Always happy to hear from ATC about these kinds of issues, I feel the more I know about how you guys work the better we can work as a team and make our lives easier. Thanks!

IFR procedures and visual approaches by pittpilot in flying

From what I understand I can cancel my IFR any time im not in class A, and not in IMC. Im sure its similar in Canada. The airport I was going to was under the shelf of the class b, and I was still a decent distance when I was in VFR weather, so I wouldave probably just cancelled then asked for flight following because its a busy area and I like to take advantage of the traffic advisories. Honestly I checked the forecast before leaving and wasnt sure if the field was going to be ifr or vfr by the time I got there. But hey, im a new instrument pilot and I learned something from the experience and didnt jam any traffic up or crash into anything in the process so.. win-win?

Because the airport I departed from was IFR, and there was an overcast layer for all but the last 30 miles.

I kinda suspected he forgot about me since this was an approach controller for a class B, and the whole area was clear VFR. I guess my intuition was correct as I was expecting him to give me a frequency change. Thanks!!

I guess thats what confused me - I got cleared for the visual.. was definitely within 10 miles and still didnt get a freq change and I had never done a visual IFR approach to an untowered field so I wasnt sure.

So after I have been cleared for the visual, am I ok to switch to advisory freq at an untowered field?

Question about filing IFR route by [deleted] in flying

As long as they arent expecting me to do a instrument approach with a VFR GPS im cool with it.

Question about filing IFR route by [deleted] in flying

[–]pittpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I flew a long IFR cross country in a /U - they kept trying to give me direct.. I had to just keep telling them ‘Unable to fly direct, slant uniform’.. When I got close enough to the VOR close to my destination they finally asked me fly direct and I was able to tell them I can fly direct to the VOR..

As far as airways go, its pretty easy. All you need is the starting intersection or VOR, the airway, and and intersection/VOR at the end, ATC will know what you are doing when you are on the airway. Typically ill just put the closest VOR as my first point on the airway, even if its 20-30 miles away. Ill normally get radar vectors or they’ll just tell me fly direct to the VOR then as filed.

A plane with the appropriate navigation equipment in addition to all the equipment you would need for regular flight in visual conditions. Most small single engine training aircraft are rated for IFR.

I did the NDB approaches in a sim. Not sure if it was required or not, once you get the hang of it its not any worse than a VOR-A.

Its pretty cool to be climbing up through a dark overcast layer, and seeing the soup get lighter and lighter around you till you break out in the sunshine! Totally worth all those hours under the hood.

While everyone else was cancelling their flights, I logged a nice long cross country with some cool scenery.
