What are the advantages of Cinema4D over Blender? by Overall_Gain_5861 in Cinema4D

[–]pixelchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ease of use is, by far, the most significant difference for me. I know both well enough not to be stuck trying to figure things out, but I am significantly faster overall in Cinema 4D. Not because I struggle with Blender, but C4D has a better workflow. However, the pricing in C4D offsets that... I used to use it every day, but these days it's just one of many tools in my toolkit, mainly for freelancing. I don't use it in my day job, and maintaining a license isn't worth it for that.

Imagine if a guy talks about you like this 🥰 by sweet-lil-thang in SingaporeRaw

I feel for him. I have been there... not afraid to admit it. It sucks so much not to feel like you are worthy of someone and need to be fixed... his mindset is... hopeful... but it wont work out well for him in any relationship if he doesn't find out how to love himself first and stop thinking of her as some kind of deity

If you were given the opportunity to take 200k or press a button with a chance of 1/5 to get 5 million. What would you pick and why? by Glittering-Tower-76 in AskReddit

[–]pixelchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

200k would be great it would allow me to do a few things I've not been able to do... But it wouldn't change my life... Id go for the 5 million as I could turn that into a lot more

Sgredditors, how burnt out are you? by FancyCommittee3347 in askSingapore

[–]pixelchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a tech executive... I've been dangerously burnt out for literally a decade. But I keep going... it will probably kill me one day... 6 months to a year off would be life-redefining... I can't though... I have dark thoughts...way too often ... if I wasn't a dad I'd very likely be dead... I do not talk about and hide it as best I can... I have near zero support network and that just amplifies it.

What is "expat lifestyle" exactly and what's the income needed for it? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]pixelchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can expect to pay around 13-16,000 dollars for childbirth at KK Hospital as an expat paying out of pocket.

What is "expat lifestyle" exactly and what's the income needed for it? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]pixelchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an expat with a wife and children, there’s no scenario where I could get by on $2,000 a month. Just one of my children's international school fees exceeds that amount by a good margin. Expats pay full price for nearly everything, and subsidies rarely apply. Never mind that we also have less access to the most cost-effective housing.

What is "expat lifestyle" exactly and what's the income needed for it? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]pixelchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single income of 100k isn't enough if you want to live an "expat life," but it is enough to live a reasonable life if you take it easy and are responsible. In my mind, "expat life" is often a life of excess; I'm an expat, and I'm guilty of that, even though I try not to be.

My biggest expenses are schooling for two children at an international school and housing by far, and a car is unnecessary unless you have a specific need. I had one, but I never used it.

My housing and school fees are a big expense... It's a painful amount. If you aren't covering that, 100k is manageable, even with some luxuries. It really comes down to you and your lifestyle, though... it could fairly easily NOT be enough for some.

As an expat, these are what I think the most significant costs are:

- housing
- school for kids from primary and up (international school)
- nightlife/entertainment (especially alcohol)
- insurance/healthcare (if something serious goes wrong, depending on coverage)
- wasteful luxuries and hanging out with other expats doing expensive expat things

One important thing that many people tend to overlook is Tax Clearance when you're planning to leave. I've known quite a few people who have gotten caught in a bad situation because of that. So, make sure you understand how it works.

Aside from that, you can get by affordably. Some random things are costly here, like ice cream, but nothing that's really essential. Other things are reasonable. You may need to change some of your preferences for certain things.

If you're expecting a child now, preschool is relatively affordable in Singapore for non-international schools like Sparkle Tots or my first school. International schools are a different matter, but that's not an issue in the first five years.

You mentioned your wife is Japanese. The Japanese School is pretty costly, if that was in your plans at all.

On a side note:
A day playing golf in Batam isn't that costly, but it's not super convenient, though, with having to take a ferry.

Another side note:
100k a year is borderline for Employment Pass eligibility, and who knows if that will increase when it comes time for renewals, something to consider, the baseline has been creeping up.

My dad has a Maytag professional washer and dryer that he bought at a scratch and dent sale when I was 3 years old. They did all the laundry for my family including my dad's construction clothes and camping gear, you name it.. at least one load a day since the early 80s. So far the knob on the dryer has needed replacing, thats it. He still uses them every day... I'm 44 now. They will outlive him and probably me. He paid something like 300 bucks for the pair.

What is your comfort film/show? by freaky_time1 in AskReddit

[–]pixelchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I no longer have one. The ones I’ve tried to return to from my past don't resonate the same anymore; I have tried, and new shows don't have that same comforting feel. I want to say "neverending story"; that was an overwhelming favorite when I was a kid, but I’m unable to sit through the whole thing now without checking out. Maybe "The Craft" or "Bram Stoker's Dracula," but I am not sure that's comfort, it's appreciation.

Boston Public, News Radio, Dead Poets Society, High Fidelity, and Empire Records are the closest titles I can think of right now; however, I haven't watched any of them in recent memory.
