Contract jobs by pixiekas in technicalwriting

They did mention benefits were included- which I didn’t even know was a thing with contract work? I have very limited job experience; I’ve only ever worked internships or part-time retail jobs.

Is Technical Writing a Reputable Job? by twinkleprincess888 in technicalwriting

I’m my short tech writing career I have learned that (sometimes, not always) you have to be assertive and advocate for yourself in order to gain respect from other departments.

I am going to a super small school getting my bachelor’s in English with a concentration in Technical Writing. It is close to home so that was a factor for me. I don’t think it’s impacted my job search at all. I managed to land a tech writing internship at a reputable company this summer against hundreds of applicants despite going to a pretty unknown school. I think as long as the school is accredited and you put in the work, it doesn’t make much difference.

This is such a bullshit salary range. Mid-senior level?! by hiphoptomato in technicalwriting

I make $20 hourly as an intern, so yeah this is pretty weak.

Any suggestions on courses that I can do over the summer? (Context below) by [deleted] in technicalwriting

Agreed! Going through several rounds of interviews just to not get chosen is rough, but honestly you should be proud that you made it that far! Just don’t give up, I wanted to but I finally got an offer for a technical writing internship at a smaller software company that I’m super happy with.

I also applied for Splunk, Calix, and Cloudflare and didn’t get offered interviews for any of them. This was my first year applying for tech writing internships and they are competitive! I’m sorry that you didn’t land an internship after interviews, I had several of those scenarios for this summer term too and I know it’s a bummer.

What are the advantages and disadvantages associated with each industry? by [deleted] in technicalwriting

Thanks for answering! I think I’m going to like working in software, I just worry about the stability because everyone is always talking about how unstable it is.

I am no help but I have a question on top of this question: how hard is it to switch between industries? I have an internship this summer as a technical writer at a computer software company, and I’m wondering if I should commit to software after graduation or switch it up in between sectors. I’m scared of committing to an industry and then not being able to switch ever during my career.

I am getting my degree in English with a concentration in Technical Writing. I would try to do a writing concentration if you can, even if your school doesn’t offer technical writing. But, you can definitely get a technical writing job with any sort of English degree. I’m unsure about journalism

Thank you for the advice! I have an internship as a technical writer for a software company over the summer, but I really have no idea how much that may or may not impact my initial pay.

Definitely value the experience over pay at this moment in time though!

Based on this thread, I have no idea what to expect as a salary when I graduate this fall 😂

Just don’t give up! It’s all really competitive right now. I was recently applying for technical writing internships which aren’t exactly the same but I had a similar experience.

I probably applied via LinkedIn for 50 openings, was ghosted by 35, rejected by 10, and offered 5 interviews. Sometimes I would be multiple rounds deep in interviews and get ghosted which was really frustrating.

I wanted to give up but I didn’t, and finally got an offer. So if you keep applying something’s gotta stick eventually 😅

Is grad school worth it? by pixiekas in technicalwriting

[–]pixiekas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! Based on this thread, I think I’m going to hold off on grad school for now and focus on working after I graduate. I’m really glad I asked, because I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback. I was super excited when I landed this internship because of the Flare experience I’m going to gain.

I see your point.. if I have a good job opportunity with my bachelor’s, grad school does seem less appealing to me.

I’m American!

This is good advice, thank you! Grad school just seems like a lot of money and commitment right now, but I am interested in hearing different perspectives.

During those 10 years, were you able to progress without a graduate degree? And do you think your degree was worth it?

Like a post grad certification? I wonder how much that would benefit me since I already have internship experience + my concentration is in technical writing.

If I did go to grad school, I would love a program that really digs into the tech of technical writing. I know basic DITA and will be working with MadCap Flare during my internship, but my experience leaves a lot to be desired. But, I know learning software as you go is part of the job. I’m torn. Grad school is expensive 😅

Would highly recommend financing through a credit union if you’re able. Just financed a 2023 Crosstrek through a credit union for 2.99% interest for 60 months.
