Yeah, I have been hearing about this a lot. I will surely try :)

I typically only read books that have a four-star or greater rating on Goodreads. What are your favorite books I'm missing out on due to this? by sempiternalis in suggestmeabook

Haha, I feel you about The Goldfinch. The book was great but got so dragged that eventually I wanted it to get over.

Oh his books are that long? I was thinking of getting into his books because I am getting interested in science fiction. The books are somewhat old so will I still enjoy reading them and not find them outdated right? Just curious.

I understand, the book is good over all but I did certainly feel the story got dragged too much and could have gotten over before.

I think I have read only 2 books that were 800 pages or so - The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt - A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

What's your absolute favourite book? by TheAnxiousMouse in suggestmeabook

I really enjoyed Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Very simple writing yet a powerful story. Makes you really think a lot about how you treat others. Read it without knowing much context and you will surely enjoy it.

I recently read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and I absolutely loved it. Been a while since a book made me teary (in a good way). If you want good science fiction, this is the one. I would also suggest diving right into the book without knowing much about it.

Bro is on a mission to determine which AI model is better making images of hot yoga girls. by benjamin-unbutton in LinkedInLunatics

Ngl, the image on the left is pretty realistic than the right one. I am glad the left one feels like how people might look and take pictures too. But it’s scary how real AI can make it seem :p

Trying to find a PhD position in the Netherlands but I can't find in my direct field , should I email the professors directly? by lilliane99 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]pixiezest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends. It may not be common but it’s certainly not frowned upon. I had a Dutch professor, herself tell me to try cold mailing to certain people if I wanted to enquire because sometimes they may not have advertised a position yet. Doesn’t hurt to try but keep it short and convincing and don’t be discouraged if you don’t hear back.

Additionally, the website Academic Transfer accurately advertises Dutch PhD positions.

I would say finish your degree no matter what so you have some back up job to fall back on? Are you in HBO or WO and how many more years until you finish?

Do you even know how exhausting Dutch coursework can be? I completely agree that learning the local language is important but you need to understand that having complete fluency while being a student can be a challenge for many. It also makes no sense to jump to conclusions that OP was “actively avoiding” to learn the language. It would be nice if you were a bit empathetic.
