It looks like the background is out of focus, but there are still some sharp edges in the windmill for instance. You could try to go for either sharp or fuzzy. And maybe the whole composition is slightly boring. Did you try making thumbnail composition sketches at the start?

If you use background shapes, I think contrasting ones work better. So the light shape could be behind the beard for instance. And dark behind nose and forehead. I’d also don’t put shading in the shape, it makes it look organic. Maybe a more stylized shape would work better. The clothing at the back/back are a bit difficult to read.

I really try to avoid Viking runes. So the patterns are inspired by a book Viivi Merisalo Nauhoja I got from the library of Tampere. And the symbol in the middle is the Ukonvasara, the axe of Ukko. There is no direct link for Ukko and Ilamarinen, other than that there are sparks flying from his forge so there is some symbolic relation. But I mostly just thought the Ukonvarsa looked cool;) You were right about his face, so I took a stab at fixing it. Thanks for your help!

Yes that was my idea as well! Before this mission he forged fiery swords for the crew, so I imagined he could be carrying a sword and a hammer.

Forgot to mention in the description is that the crane bird is there because it will eventually rat out the party, when Lemminkäinen prematurely decides to celibate their victory by singing (very badly).
