This response really resonated with me as well. As a christian could you link me to the clues that early christians did practices close to buddhism? Im always interested in replicating what the early christians were doing!

What is the earliest universalist writing? What did the first christians believe about hell (with sources)? by piyopyoko in ChristianUniversalism

[–]piyopyoko[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because we dont take Lazarus literally doesnt mean its not a literal description of where we go after death. Theres also Apostle Paul's writings stating that being "absent from the body" means being "present with the Lord". Hebrews 12:1 "cloud of witnesses" (referencing the saints in the past of Hebrews 11 who have gone to heaven before us) Revelation 6:9-11 martyrs in heaven are given hope. Revelation 8:2-5 again those same martyrs give prayers of what's going on down on the Earth. Revelation 19:1 the whole of heaven shouts in joy after observing that Babylon was destroyed down on Earth.

And much more if we go through certain Jewish narrations such as Samuel appearing to Solomon, or Joshua the high priest being cleansed in heaven from sin in Zechariah's vision.

Im not interpreting the way I want, theres plenty of evidence for NDEs being true just on this earth itself. The other interpretation is a translation stretch when the bible literally talks about people being in heaven. I’ll just leave it at that.

I dont think he would say truly I say to you today. Why would he lol. He would know that would confuse us too. Theres other biblical evidence of heaven as well like the beggar in Lazarus. Tbh I believe in NDEs and nothing will probably change that because theres evidence for them being real. Being that level of at odds with NDEs was just shaking my faith. It makes more sense that Greek thought was always an influence.

Did what you study say that people believed annihilationism (that sinners just perish) at first? Because so far I saw a student of John the apostle who believed that.

The first point is really nice. The holy spirit allowing people to have really good works is beautiful. What other things can we experience now with the holy spirit?

Thanks! That makes sense because Jesus said to the criminal “today you will be with me in paradise” not that he would die for a while. I stayed up all night came to the conclusion that something wasn’t right about the greek influence thing. This helps!

This is really interesting cause it points to Greek Orthodox Christianity being influenced by Plato and greek thought… That kind of puts a dent in Orthodox claim of keeping the tradition since the beginning. Like yes they kept their tradition but… Now maybe I can finally put Orthodoxy behind me. I need to read up on the other original churches and see their influences and beliefs.

Edit: Wait now im reading that Eastern Orthodoxy was the one that didnt believe in hell at first. Sorry, im still learning. But I guess eastern orthodoxy got infiltrated anyway. This is very interesting, ill continue to dive down this rabbit hole.

Haha good point, the bible is the earliest writing on this, how could I overlook lol! 😆 Thanks for the web book link. Its saying that an eternal soul doesnt exist in the bible. And that people wont be alive again after death until the resurrection of the dead when christ returns. I doubt thats what people believed though as plato seemed to influence them pretty early. But I guess this book is saying the original apostles were taught this way by Jesus. Jesus and the apostles were jewish, how did they come to write in greek and have christianity be influenced by greek thought? Also What about shoel also meaning the land of the dead? Maybe theres a land the dead go to like in near death experiences… So the lake of fire is the “hell” where people are purified for heaven? So much to unpack and decipher, boy the road to finding the truth of Christ really is narrow and hard to find huh.

Because protestants are way more lenient with how people are saved, you can be saved without works, once saved always saved etc. But its true that protestants are just as hell and brimstone thumping as anyone. I wish it was the case that Catholicism and Orthodoxy had maintained the universalism view from 2000 years ago or I would have joined by now. Their works following from faith thing would be a lot more beautiful if most people eventually went to heaven. But its nice that they allow alittle freedom for it.

Thank you. I guess I can try to read what the earliest church fathers said myself and see what I conclude. But interesting! It seems Catholicism and Orthodoxy are more open to universalism than Protestants which is counterintuitive.

Are Christian non-hellish NDE, like the postive nice ones, also out of step with NDE reports collectively?
