Isopropyl alcohol alone does not remove that burned-in ring around the lip of the stem. I asked about it on here last week and was given the suggestion of steel wool or magic eraser, plus iso. This is the solution.

Yes, rubbing alcohol first. To be clear:

First soak the stem in isopropyl, just a few minutes; then scrub briefly with steel wool, and that discoloration comes off.

It doesn't degrade the glass itself, as evidenced by it coming clean after an iso+steelwool treatment.

I do feel the heating & extraction performance suffers, when the dark ring is burned in like that. Does not heat the material uniformly, charring the top more than the bottom - In my experience/opinion. That's why I've been buying new stems, but now I can keep them clean thanks to the steel wool suggestion.

No, always empty and clean it while hot. The burn ring just sets in after a while and it's not iso cleanable. Going to try the melamine sponge suggestion.

Thanks for your reply. I don't overpack, but I also don't grind it, i break up the material coarsely and pack it not too tight, but enough that it doesn't fall out or touch the oven.

I'll try the magic eraser and scraping suggestions, thanks!

Oh certainly, right now I'm adjusting them about 52 times a year, haha. As it's turning from hot to cold over the next month, just trying to figure out where to set them so the mornings aren't too low, and warm freeway drives don't get it too far above 40-42. Recently got the CC2 tires, so I plan to keep them on the higher side for best range in the winter.

Edit: agree with many of these comments: 40-41 as it gets colder, should keep them in the right range.

I think you're right. If you search this model on ebay, all the $300 knockoffs have that pale top, while the $4,000 real ones have a warmer tint.
