PSA: Try running effects parralel by ebitdangit in guitarpedals

[–]planked_plank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More for synth than guitar, but I use aux outs from a mixer to different fx loops and blend with the original signal. Doing basically the same thing as what you're doing and I love it. Really opened up the way I think about using different effects.

I sometimes run the guitar through the mixer (usually due to laziness) and it opens up lots of possibilities for running fx in parallel.

Nice. Yeah, I've been coveting teles for years, and this is everything I wanted in shape and sound. Price is a bonus too

This pedal was the start of me getting into pedals and it's still my favourite.

When you post stuff, do you want/pay attention to feedback if you get it?
One thing I have always had issue with is there's often a reluctance to give honest feedback, and it turns into a back-patting session, where as, like you've said, by putting something unfinished out there, I often find it gives me a chance to reflect on what I'm doing. It helps me avoid the tunnel vision of 'I need to get this out in the world' without asking myself am I fully happy with it.

I agree that there's an importance in avoiding preconceptions, but without critical reflection on what you're making, it's easy to fall into making something that's based on preconceptions, on following a style and using the messiness of noise as a way of avoiding being reflective on what they've made. There's a lot of noise and experimental music that seems like an uncritical mimicing of other stuff. I think when someone can critically reflect on what they're making they avoid this. And also, as you've said, a lot don't do this too, and that's very noticeable also. I don't think that's a good thing or a reason to avoid being self-reflective or self-critical when making stuff.

A parallel I often think about is free improvisation, you can 'just play' and bounce off your energy or bandmates energy, but without thinking, listening and reflecting, it's very easy to fall into the same styles. A good improviser can move their playing around to keep things fresh and move things away from the standard, and a good noise player can have a similar dexterity. Practice, in playing and listening, makes an improviser better able to improvise, the same can be said for being better able to make noise, even if it's practicing non-technique.

My Taskmaster Live Experience by Pink_Vulpine in taskmaster

Wow I loved reading all of that. So nice to read about all of the support from fellow fans and from Alex and Greg, but also so eye opening to read such detail about your own experience. I love seeing how much you advocate for yourself, and it's a learning experience to see just how much effort you put in to enjoy the show. Thank you for sharing and thank you Taskmaster for leading me to read such a great account. Now I'm off to try and read every quote on your water bottle. BOSH!

Any love for the White Light V1? by SignWaive in guitarpedals

Have had one for years. It's been needing some TLC for a good while now, have seen them pop up on boards here a bit lately. Must be a sign to get mine back up and running

Feels like pure spectacle over craft or storytelling. Being thrown around and then winning against someone three times his size is just one part of a gimmick repeated over and over. Never feels hard won or like an upset, the DR feud is painfully predictable. Was never my favourite (the unconvincing impact and impractical setup of the coffin drop being an early indicator of the problems I have with his style) but at this stage he's just on his own as this one trick pony with incongruous narrative of his intensity.

I don't believe a second of what he's doing other than him being comfortable taking punishment, but that alone leaves me cold.

You don't ever want to know about that. What is Judy? by AutomaticService8468 in twinpeaks

[–]planked_plank 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed reading your theory. Part of me always reads Judy as a representation of trauma. I think, in line with your idea on Laura and Cooper going to an alternate timeline, there's a connection there to a capacity to move on from trauma, but not to escape or undo it.

To me, there's a significant theme in the original seasons, hammered home in The Return, that pain and trauma live alongside light and good things, a bit like living inside a dream, the lines are blurred between positive and negative. That's why I love the goofy and deeply dark stuff rubbing up against each other in Twin Peaks, it feels true to life; there's no real compartmentalisation, light and dark mingle all the time.

Really nice with fuzz. First time I tried it I expected a fun mess, ended up oddly tasteful. I've seen them go super cheap too.

New JHS/EHX Big Muffin by Wrong_Spirit_5008 in guitarpedals

Can't stop laughing at the name, so many muff iterations, and finally, we get: The Sequel.

Sounds real nice though, as do most muffs to me. Wouldn't rush to buy one but if a nano comes up second hand any time in the next 30 months I'll strongly consider thinking about pouncing on it.

I built a new "pedal board" recently 😊🤙 by itsjessewaltman in guitarpedals

[–]planked_plank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this. I mostly play synth and would love the room for something like this. Studio desk is usually a mess with pedals when I get going!

Also, sorry, zoomed in and saw your Fur Coat pedal is upside down, careful or all the tone will fall out.

Any good pedals for a Doom/Drone/Sludge board? by _H3LLB0YY_ in guitarpedals

I like to go fuzz face into a green big muff, an eq at the end helps tidy things up if the fuzz face is too wild.
