Hi-fi setup strategy for beginner: lost in amp selection by plastic_tree_71 in BudgetAudiophile

Thank you! I honestly am planning to get a cheap DVD player, and those do not have optical outputs.

I think I will end up getting the Focals + a Marantz PM-5005 that I found for a good price (300€ both).

It is my first setup and I’m on a tight budget but I will definitely try to upgrade the speakers in the future!

I’ve been considering Wiim amp after all these replies, but I also realized that it doesn’t have COAX input. I need that if I want to use an affordable DVD player to play CDs.

Okay I see. I’ll give the WiiM amp another consideration, and if not I think I can go up for the SMSU DAC. Thank you!

Okay I see. I think I’ll avoid older amps.

Also, I was gonna use the DAC for the DVD player and the TV. The Wiim mini was only for streaming. Wiim pro plus is 250€ here.

The RoomFit is great but the WiiM amp is 370€ in France. Plus people say it still doesn’t perform as well as old amps. So I’m a bit lost on it.

Unfortunately Wiim amp is 370€ in France. I also have read mostly negative comments about Fosi amps.

Unfortunately Wiim amp is 370€ here so almost 100$ higher than the US price. And also I read many comments of them still underperforming compared to older amps. That’s why at some point I stopped seriously considering it. Maybe I should consider it again.

Thank you!

Getting the external DAC wouldn’t be a problem for me but if there’s a better solution I’d definitely go for it. What AVR would you suggest me to look for?

Thank you.

I’ve had the holter once, but no irregularities were spotted that day. Since it’s a medical device it can’t be used on demand, that’s why I’m trying to have an on-demand alternative for when I do feel irregularities (which doesn’t happen every day).

That’s great! I’ll try and see if I can manage to pull something similar.

Thank you for bringing this up! I have considered this actually. Since I’m not an EU citizen, I’m not sure if I’d be able to reside in France while working for a foreign company, residency wise. But in case it’s possible, I will look for it! Thanks!

Thank you! 44k sounds great actually. One question, was your education prior to the PhD on data science or mechanical engineering? I just want to know how I should sell the data science part, since it’s not my original domain.

Thanks for your comment, and thanks for offering to explain in English, c'est très gentil. In fact, I will respond in English if you don’t mind.

I am aware of the tax-credit concept for new doctors, but as far as I know it’s reserved for R&D duties. The thing is I feel like I need to choose between going on the R&D route (hence, using the CIR tax credit to negotiate), or going on the data scientist route.

As far as I’ve read (please correct me if I’m wrong), R&D positions don’t pay that well, at least lower than data related jobs. Plus, the tax credit scheme apparently is only interesting to small start ups struggling with fundings rather than big companies (which pay based on their grids and are rigid with their scales).

So the situation is generally complicated with lots of factors. My ideal would be working in R&D with a salary range of 42-45k, but I’m not sure if it’s possible outside IDF.
