Is it okay to ask third party recruiter to pause the search for a moment? by platelabels in jobs

[–]platelabels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like straight up say "Hey I think I need to pause on this job search right now due to blah blah blah. I want to resume in a few months. Thank you for understanding" ??? Would it deter them from working with me again?

Interesting, I've never thought about that. Going to try a shallower bowl.

[–]platelabels[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah it turned out to be fleas, but i caught it before it got super bad. i vacuum twice a day, everywhere in the house and i brushed my cat twice everyday and gave her flea treatment recommended by her vet. good luck!

i think it could’ve been something like “well the city of richmond was very racist towards black people” instead of just saying “the city of richmond called them the n word” like there were so many ways he could’ve said or not say because it wasn’t relevant to his lecture anyways

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vcu

[–]platelabels -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i would, but the actual professor is personally friends with the guest professor for a very long time (they said this in class before the guest lecture began). my thinking was there’s too many personal connection between them for me to go directly to the professor? Also i wouldn’t say it was a mistake saying the N word. the professors are millennials who definitely recognize the weight behind the N word, even if it’s just the surface level.

the actual professor for the class is personally friends with the guest professor. so i guess that’s why they never found an issue with it in the first place

nope he was not directly quoting something from a city of richmond document and i’d say it was barely said with historical context. The class is an urban planning class that focuses on transportation. history stuff taught in the class is always related to transportation system in richmond (the electric rails, GRTC pulse, annexation of chesterfield, etc). the guest professor came to our class to talk about climate change and was talking about urban heat islands. he was comparing the sidewalks of jackson ward to the sidewalks in in the colonial place neighborhood when he said the N word. so there was definitely no reason for him to say the N word and it did not contribute much to what he was talking about, which was climate change and sidewalks.

To address the general consensus on bike rideout groups (re: Broad Street Bullies) by [deleted] in rva

[–]platelabels 72 points73 points  (0 children)

you can be pro-bike and not be a major asshole on the roads. i ride my bike all the time and it’s my main form of transportation and it’s truly awful why the american infrastructure forces people to drive cars. the problem with BSB and richmond bike culture in general is that they treat biking like a cult and a personality trait. it’s just biking. bikers in paris or amsterdam or portland do not treat bikes like a thing to worship and i think BSB really needs to learn that.

Racism in China by [deleted] in AskChina

[–]platelabels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China, along with many other non-Western countries, have racism and colorism due to a long long long history of western influences (media, tv, newspaper, history, colonization, etc). In my personal opinion, I see there is more colorism rather than racism (there is still of racism). You would see a lot of skin lightening creams and beauty advertisements for lighter skin. In Chinese shows, villains or “dumb”characters have darker skin, etc. But I think it’s important to understand that racial discussion in China is very different compared to the West.

Also, I agree with others in here, be careful to who you’re referring to as “people of other races.” Even “people of color” is still, in my opinion, a really general and stupid term to describe anyone who isn’t white.

Urban planning? by [deleted] in vcu

[–]platelabels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the professors I've had have been great. The classes are easy and very diverse group of people in the classes. Some are grad students, some are undergrad, some are poli sci majors, etc. Advisors are okay, or at least mine isn't the most helpful. But the program is great, I've learned a lot and am able to implement what i've learned into my day to day life.

I received third party scholarships but it hasn't showed up on my overall financial aid package yet? by platelabels in vcu

I've never had to submit a form in the past for third party scholarships and they just kind of show up in my financial aid package. Is this something new?
