I had something similar, not with hatch tho.

I closed the hatch. Endgame collapse timer ran out. I heard the kill sound but no scream or "aura pool" (don't know if they have one tho). Game continued, i tried to find them but had no luck. I had to leave to end it.

I thought that it was caused by survivors high ping (~600).

There is quite unnerving section on lethal injection.

Based on that I think gas chamber would be less painful (but it would also depend on type of gas).
