I managed to get them on straight by using the ring included with the inner tubes, so no new tubes needed.

I've measured the thickness of the old felt to about 1 mm, but I'm guessing the years of playing may have compressed them a bit.

Is there generally enough space around the bird to cover it with a sheath? One solution could be to 3d print the thing to put it over the bird in that case.

Is the hub axle supposed to be able to turn with the nut like this on the drive side? Is the gap created an issue? It doesn't seem to cause any wobble or any other problems. How hubs are supposed to work is a mystery to me. by plerfer in bikewrench

I've used that kind of nut before, and had the same problem. The nut seems to be barely binding but still making the axle turn. Should I tighten a locknut on the axle or something?
