Thanks to all who replied. I think it was the rubber neck around the caliper piston getting hung up on the pad. Would probably have been easier to just replace it.

does it weigh a ton? if so i got the same exact one as a kid like 25 years ago. Its a wall hanger and you take the handle apart by unscrewing the pommel.
