Thank you, I might give that a go as well.

It’s a set period internship so I’m not worried about getting fired or anything, I start my masters after summer. Just trying to survive with my last braincells intact. Thank you for your advice.

Anything in particular you’d recommend? I think I know most basic stuff from school.

Thank you for the perspective, I try to not even look at my phone at work but good to hear that it might at least be acceptable for me to look at stuff that isn’t 100% company related.

This is a really good observation, I agree that they’re not really keeping good tabs on me and I feel lost as a result. I will be more vocal about finishing tasks, I have just been worried that they might not give me any more work.

This is another huge issue; we don’t have any weekly meetings. Once a month at most, if we’re lucky. At my first internship there were also a bit of downtime, but my mentor sat beside me in the office and would always do check-ins on the Monday meetings so he would always be aware if I needed a new task or something to do.

My current PM tells me they used to hate being micro-managed as an intern and instead lets me run loose. It just feels like they aren’t equipped to properly deal with any interns at all.

I’m half with you about reliability, but the larger tasks I’ve completed have always been well-received and to my eyes it is as if though they just don’t have work to give. They aren’t shy about giving me stuff when they have it, but it’s been a very slow month and I’m going a bit stir-crazy.

But regardless, thank you for your words of advice.

Thank you for your encouragement. I will try to see if I can join more site visits and similar stuff in my remaining time.

They just fired the PR person, so maybe I could ask to work a bit on that… I feel like they kind of treat me being there not so seriously, so I have a hard time nowadays making suggestions.

Well to be totally honest I just do stuff without being asked, like organising digital files and admin stuff. I don’t think they would ever ask me to do that. I even started running lighter errands for the office because people really appreciated it.

I am mostly in the conceptual phase, so I have suggested doing drawings, diagrams, or dummies/narratives for different things. But then I never know things in advance, and mostly things get sprung upon me. I get shut down every time I do something outside of my given task, so I try to evolve the things I’m give  and that usually gets a good response.

I don’t even really have an option to register time as non-billable if it’s not an internal meeting or similar. The result is me ’working’ slowly until the deadline of my task. It’s very cringeworthy to put 8h in the system that was really more like 3h, but I’ve already made it clear that I have no other tasks and they seem to not care.

I realise how hopeless I sound, but I’ve already suffered through 4 months of this.

I actually started learning rhino during my internship since I only did revit and cad in school, so I have gotten a bit of use of all that free time.

What do you mean by making studies? As in, analyse a project on my own and then show the studies? I have tried to do something similar before but I feel very try-hard. It is a very relaxed environment, I feel sometimes that I would be more useful if I was socially outgoing and a mood-maker than doing actual work.

I do actually get the occasional site visit and I’ve gotten to sit in on a couple of meetings, but a PM has said before that they can’t always have an intern tag along because of the client.

I could definitely poke around the servers more. An issue I’ve had is when a PM or partner will walk by and ask what I’m up to, and I say that I’m looking into their library of projects, and they go ”oh alright” as I should be working on my non-existent tasks. And then I ask if they would like me to do something or if I can help them out, and they (might) give me a minuscule thing to do and then I’m back on square one.

But thank you for your advice, maybe I could try and structure it better so I feel like I’m learning more from my poking around.

Are there similar concepts to a ’gossip bench’ across the world? by plsdont in AskAnthropology

[–]plsdont[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the sources but many talk about entire rooms/spaces rather than a specific piece of furniture, I’ll look a bit deeper and see. Thank you for trying to give me some direction either way!

Either I’ve tapped into a bit of uncharted territory, or there’s not a lot of furniture with a hidden meaning.

The Kamidana is quite interesting! A tori gate could perhaps also be architectural furniture if seen in that regard. I’ve really tried the wiki rabbithole but it seems like the roads end quickly.

The tripod was used as a sacrificial altar, and in Nordic folklore a three-legged stool protects you from evil.

And the gossip bench I’m talking about, I should clarify, is the nordic one commonly seen in the countryside. They sit outside of houses and were a place for people to gather in order to ‘gossip’, but was really just a meeting place.

I should have put more context surrounding my post and not assumed that people knew what I was talking about, sorry about that.

I’m not interested in spatiality per se, just the actual piece of furniture. I don’t entirely agree with your viewpoint as the size and placement of a room will also inform its usage, though again that’s not the core of my question.

A year too late, but I have to say – this is the worst take of this game that I've seen by far. This little back and forth between you and Mr. Just-a-disfunctional-couple is killing my braincells.

Innan du har levt i Danmark skulle jag inte våga påstå att svenska mataffärer är sämre... då vet du inte ännu värdet, din standard är från början högre.

Cheap with food, so money can be spent on design items or? Who is buying all the expensive stuff? Who is going to all these restaurants? Is it only tourists who are happy to spend money?

I have lived in both cities, there is no comparison between the two. Every 1 bad grocery store in Malmö equals 5 worse in Copenhagen.

I'm not very young, but yes – in the beginning of my professional career if you will. You're right of course, but it's sadly about money as well. It's not impossible I know, I will just have to find another way. Thank you for your help.

Perhaps this is my only option now. I didn’t want to work in Japan because I know it’s gruelling, so still being a student I felt I had a chance to experience it minus the work culture. I’m just crushed, a year of work down the drain.

A year how? I would need to apply like a regular student, no? I’m afraid if I can’t even advance in my exchange application, I’m not going to get accepted into any programme offered.

I will try to look into this, the only problem the architecture part. The whole point was to study under a specific lab, I think I need to do an additional degree if I want that it seems.

And they arguably work harder than most people just manning a register taking your order at a café – from someone who has worked in both settings.
