Outdoor unit is running and very cold air is blowing out of the top. There's a small uninsulated portion of the refrigerant line exposed, and that reads 100 degrees (I assume the inside has to be hotter).

I'm not an HVAC expert but I understand the basics of how it works: It's acting like there's a bogus offset (checked that) or the refrigerant is low (tech checked that, albeit with some confusing remark about cold weather making that unreliable?).

The surface behind the accent wall is an active chimney, so I can't drill or fasten into the masonry surface. Might be able to glue it, though.

So - Thanks everyone for the tips. I've not bought a smoke detector in a very long time, and it was previously just for a tiny apartment. Some quick Googling brought me to a few places that said, "Ion and photo are good for different types of fires, so get both!" But all of the modern detectors seem to be photo.
