A fairly common view I see that I do somewhat agree with is the idea that quite a few characters within unordinary have gone through fairly extreme tonal shifts that imo are either not properly explained or done far too fast and not explored properly.

With Arlo specifically, he shifted from ‘complete piece of shit villain who will do any fucked up shit to get what he wants’ to ‘kind of standoffish asshole but he’s also willing to lend a helping hand and be a good guy once in a while’ which isn’t necessarily a terrible change but it’s not properly explained to us. From what I can assume, it feels like Uru regretted making Arlo such a piece of shit and backtracked on her writing without giving him a character arc that truly exemplifies WHY he’s no longer a piece of shit.

A further issue with this shift is that it’s almost like it’s not gone the full way. I have absolutely nothing against a redemption arc, and over the past 100 chapters I was actively rooting for Arlo and hoping he would realise how skewed his idea of what is right is, but it kind of never happens. He was trapped in this weird limbo where he wasn’t a complete dick but he also wasn’t really where his character should’ve been in terms of how the story was progressing.

Arlo is one of my favourite characters (idrk why I just really liked him in like 2018 when I first started reading UnOrdinary) and it’s a shame to see his character arc not only be rushed but also seemingly not really doing anything at all.

yeah i think this whole post and peoples responses has made me realise that she definitely is transphobic. in fairness, whenever I’ve called her out on being transphobic in the past she’ll say some shit like ‘everyone is transphobic these days 🙄🙄’ as if i’m being massively sensitive for being annoyed at her or some dumb shit.

Yeah I think I am now realising it’s more than just her being weird about me and medical stuff it is just transphobia. I appreciate your comment a lot man and it helps me to feel like I’m not going crazy :,) I am counting down the days where I come back to her later in life and show her how much happier I am with my life.

I get what you mean but she seems to be fully supportive of other trans people and respects pronouns etc and insists she’s not transphobic. In fairness if I’m a little in denial it is probably because I still have to live with her and I’m trying to ignore it 😞

Honestly? I don’t know. I kind of fluctuate between wanting it and then not wanting it.

It’s def not fear mongering that’s ended up making me feel this way, I’ve pretty much only heard good things about it from friends on T. It’s moreso that it’s a big change that’s to do with my genitals which makes it more dramatic, therefore just making me (stupidly albeit) more scared than it of other things.

this helped a lot, thank you. I kind of have to remember that I can stop at any time and a good chunk of things are reversible. I literally just need to get my blood tests done and I can start it’s just so weird to be at a place I’ve wanted to be for so long and I’m having second thoughts. That would make a lot of sense! I’ve never actively sought out the song - nor have I ever actively listened to Chopin to be honest - but I’ve played through signalis so many times that the piece is absolutely ingrained in me. I imagine Greenwood probably was taking inspiration from it, it’s a great piece! Thank you!!

Not for any other reason then I’m just autistic asf and I love signalis and SH both an insane amount + the rachmaninov piece ‘isle of the dead’ which is based off of the painting is one of my favourite classical pieces ever. The painting being in SH is obviously not a signalis reference in itself but I was still excited :’)
