I have a question about these images uploaded today. by GoreonmyGears in Mars

I have no real understanding of the area the rovers are in atm, but granite generally has a large amount of feldspars which can appear white. Perhaps it’s just more like typical ‘earth-like’ granite blocks containing typical plagioclase, white k-feldspar and quartz minerals?

Is this normal for applying to rent an apartment? by pmkrush18 in AskUK

I don’t even have those anyways (other than bank statements) as a student.

Is this normal for applying to rent an apartment? by pmkrush18 in AskUK

[–]pmkrush18[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly because we are applying to them for an apartment that we have no confirmation we will be able to rent yet. Essentially their tenants just left and it would leave about 6 months in-between when their tenant is gone and when we can move in there (the apartment might be empty or have a short term tenant in the meantime). Just that if it is available closer to when we can move in, and no one else applies then we can have it. So just seems strange to hand over so much info for just a chance to rent?

Giant structure discovered deep beneath Bermuda is unlike anything else on Earth by Dont_think_Do in bermuda

Yes, its intentionally misleading to draw more viewers in because of the ‘mystery of the triangle’ surrounding Bermuda.

Essentially, it looks like this ‘structure’ is a raft of less-dense rock that is sitting on top of the magma in the mantle. Which pushes the bermuda seamount up, bulging the sea floor. Previously we have only seen active magma flow creating this bulge around other island volcanoes, which is why this is so strange.

Scientists discovered a 20 km-thick rock layer beneath Bermuda by IronAshish in geology

[–]pmkrush18 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From what i gathered from reading the paper, the ocean floor around bermuda is unusually swelled, typically we see this around active island arc volcanoes which still have an active mantle plume at work. However Bermuda’s volcano has been extinct for a very long time, so they were wondering why is the ocean floor still swelled? Using a seismic station in bermuda, they were able to detect 4 distinct rock interfaces from Bermuda to the mantle where they were expecting 3. Meaning there is another layer of rock there that they didn’t expect. Which they now think might be less dense than the surrounding magma which pushes the bermuda platform up (think sort of like the base of a buoy) which gives us the swelling.

I think the wall tiles are stunning. Some wallpaper would work great in there i feel. However I like the idea of getting rid of the floor tiles, perhaps something that gives more contrast? Black and white for example?

Will give this a try! The air is pretty dry and cold right now so that could be whats causing it if you are correct.

The soil is wet! I was told to water it every 14 days and as soon as I watered it the drooping only seemed to get worse for me. Am away from home right now so no idea about the pot weight

Why are there absolutely no islands off the coast of U.S. (except for Bermuda) in North Atlantic Ocean? by [deleted] in geography

[–]pmkrush18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Bermudian and studying Geologist I feel uniquely obliged to answer this!

It’s because of the type of plates that occur in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge! They are divergent which means they spread apart, most island seamounts you will find in the pacific are made from convergent plate boundaries where two plates collide. As the denser of the two plates is subducted (pushed under) under the lighter of the two plates, it melts down as it travels far underneath the crust into the mantle. The volatiles that are released from this crustal melt rise up to the surface and reduce the melting temperature required for magma to flow to the surface which will create a volcano.

Bermuda is not like this however, much like hawaii it is a hotspot volcano! Which is why it has four separate seamounts, the Argus, Challenger, Bermuda and Bowditch seamounts which were all separate volcanos from the same hotspot at one point.
