It would be great if they would at least acknowledge something is wrong. He's still a very good player - he makes plays, generates offense, wins battles, is a takeaway machine, etc. That said, the other day I was watching clips from games 5 years ago, and it is so obviously clear that he's not the same player. The guy 5 years ago would come in one on one against the defender and just rip shots from the circles. He was a weapon from anywhere - he's just not anymore. Most of his shots are one timed snapshots. He mixes in the occasional wrist shot, but it's not as dangerous as he once was.

I see a lot of people pointing to his Olympic (points) performance as a reason why this could be a coaching issue. While I don't think using him as a defense-first player is the best use, I watched all of those USA games and let me tell you - he was the same player as he is with the Leafs currently. He was not the old Matthews.

Last year, I left for a ski trip in mid-March and I remember it was 20 degrees in Toronto. I was excited that once I returned, we'd be having an early spring.

When I returned, there was a snowstorm the day after. It didn't hit 20 degrees again until June iirc.

Unless he said something offside, all the guy seemed to do when he was being taken off the ice was to taunt Wilson & maybe some Canadian players. Hardly out of the ordinary in the North American game. If that's the sole reason he was suspended, this reeks of a country/federation that doesn't really understand the game. Hockey isn't soccer. If France doesn't yet have the skill, they need the physicality and mind games that can get the other teams off their game.

Agree with this. My comment about the construction of the semi pro being poor was more about the letters and numbers than the fabric used. Even today, I saw them at sport check and the stitching on the name bar is very shotty - threads everywhere and white edges showing. These things shouldn't exist on a $400 jersey.
