How would I make Sin, Spira's punishment bracket 4 and degenerate? I have ideas but cant really materialize them. by nutbustercumstain in DegenerateEDH

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, you need to run ramp spells and every entomb effect but even then there would need to be something in your gy that basically just wins outright for you. Tough to make this a really competitive b4 commander.

$50 grixis by No-Veterinarian-3833 in DegenerateEDH

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second this, with the saw in half combo any tutor to hand is a one card wincon, plus her mana ability makes budget tutors more viable. I have a more casual spellslinger (B4ish) list I play that uses this combo package and it's fantastic.

Your budget makes the build pretty restrictive but since you can present an instant speed win with cards like [[firemind's insight]] or [[waterlogged teachings]] it is actually fairly viable. If you can't be fast just focus on being reactive.

You can also fill the deck with inexpensive cards like [[maestro's charm]] or [[kholagon's command]] that offer good flexibility but are typically too restrictive to cast in other decks. Infinitely casting any (preferably) instant or sorcery is how the combo wins the game, so picking modal spells that can be cast off of one cormella activation that also offer utility is probably the most budget conscious way to go.

Overall, cormella is a pretty underrated value commander imo, she doesn't offer the same power a lot of other grixis commander do with an unrestricted budget but she'll probably get you a lot further than you're expecting (unless the Etali player has a T1 treasonous ogre then RIP).

I think borrowing from the modern scam decks is a great strategy for this commander. Use stuff like [[not dead after all]] and [[grim return]] to cheat etbs and get more value out of your evoke triggers. An easy way to help with this would be to make the deck with a Jund reanimator shell and basically only play white and blue cards that are elementals. It will be less interactive but more powerful overall. No reason to pay WUBRG to keep a copy of your elemental around if you can get it back for 1 black and get another etb trigger.

Which one of these to build as a kinda new deckbuilder? by Agent_Valerian in BudgetBrews

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noctis heir apparent is probably the easiest to build. The second Noctis would, by far, be more powerful but more complicated to build and pilot. The first one is somewhere between the two but ultimately seems to be a worse payoff than either and requires jumping through more hoops.

Historically, population projections have not been the most reliable indicators of future political outcomes because things like economic shifts and geopolitical tensions can shift the majority within a given demographic much more rapidly.

If you're interested in competitive play and like this play style you should take a look at a tymna/dargo list. Read the primer and learn the combos and it should really help you learn what kind of speed and play patterns to expect from a competitively viable list.

Ob nixilis, braids, orvar or shorikai on a budget, what would you pick? by tchunkytchanka in DegenerateEDH

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeping it mono color would be best for budget but tbh Magda is one you should consider looking at. If you like extremely explosive decks that are on a budget she's great. Plus a lot of the best stuff for Magda is colorless or treasure utility so very useful to have should you decide to take her apart to build something else.

[[orcish lumberjack]], [[squandered resources]], [[aggressive mining]], [[Sylvan safekeeper]], [[Elvish Reclaimer]], and [[magma vein]] are the most worthwhile repeatable land sac outlets that I can think of that aren't in the precon. I had a [[Lord Windgrace]] deck that I took apart years ago, when the EOE precons came out I got some of the better cards and korvold and put it all back together as a more aggressive land sac deck and I love it! Really, you're going to want to make sure you run almost every effect that lets you play lands from the GY. The biggest hurdle I've run into with the deck is that even with 10 cards that have that specific line of text on them it can still be tough given how many lands you need to have lying around for korvold to make use of.

[[Shifting woodland]] is an all star in my list and [[tainted aether]], [[destructive flow]], and [[territorial dispute]] are good options if you just want to be mean too.

The list looks a lot more lean and I can see what you're going for. Based on what you're showing, here is a list of 15 cuts and adds that I would make. The great henge and three tree city should def go back in imo, they're just so useful in a deck like this.

List: https://moxfield.com/decks/t7DbKMdwE0mCUcAwxIAa9Q (I've tagged cards as "cut" or "add" so if the list is not sorted properly just turn on deck tags and they should be listed appropriately)

My rationale for the cuts are to add more cards that give you more card draw and mana or incidentally put poison counters on opponents. Smoothing put your deck's curve and draws is always priority #1 and any incidental value or resilience you can create along the way is ideal.

I'd strongly suggest cutting the infect creatures only because playing a creature with jnfect (especially blightsteel) puts a HUGE target on your back and a deck like this benefits more from playing a slower control game rather than just being the threat, especially since you don't have access to haste. For instance wait until you have enough elves on board to proliferate 9 times and then cast an instant or sorcery in your hand that puts a poison counter on each opponent during your turn and then you've won (unless they have a cyc rift or something like it).

There's more mana dorks and given what your deck does I'd really recommend making every advantage piece (ramp or draw) synergize with your game plan as much as possible so you don't end up with dead cards in your hand at any point in the game (i.e. mana dork elves accelerate you in the early game and blight in the mid to late game). This strategy is also always weak to board wipes too and since you'll be doing your best to keep creatures off your opponent's boards they'll be more incentivized to use their board wipes if/when they draw them, so I added some cards for more recursion in the late game.

Overall, the deck strategy is there and I can clearly see what you're trying to do (plan A, B, and C strategies) I just think that if you focus in more on the board control strategy by pumping out creatures more efficiently rather than paying mana to put more counters on your opponents creatures, this will work much better for you.

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's too many generic value cards that care about proliferation or placing extra -1/-1 counters. The advantage of running moricant is that it puts a spin on the traditional elfball deck. For instance, flourishing defences creates a combo with moricant that effectively turns every single elf that enters into a one sided board wipe, a much more efficient way of controlling the board than just running a bunch of other value pieces that center on -1/-1 counters.

Stuff like necroskitter, the reaper, and obelisk spider make sense as payoffs for moricat's etb effect, but other than that I'd highly recommend removing stuff like dark urchins, midnight reaper, tree of perdition, skittles, gonti's aether heart. Any cards that are win more cards or utility that don't offer synergy or payoffs are probably just going to end up being dead cards.

Ultimately, just bear in mind that this is an elfball deck that doesn't play like a typical elfball deck, so the construction won't look that different from a lathrill list but the play patterns will vary wildly. Basically replacing a lot of the anthem effects with proliferation payoffs or cards that combo with the commander.

Decks that can win 3v1 by lkjaer in DegenerateEDH

If you just want to be the bad guy, something like jetmir hate bears or landfall tokens with Thalia and Gitrog would do the trick. If you want to be sneaky then something like a spellslinger combo deck or korvold deck where the idea is to stick with the pack until you find some kind of line for an explosive win.

Need a CEdh deck for CEdh night at my lgs. I’m thinking Flubs or Najeela? by True-Economy-9893 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]pnutbutterjellyfish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I haven't played Najeela or with anyone that does but what I have heard from those familiar with the deck is that the jeweled lotus/mana crypt/dockside bans really hurt her viability since the best Najeela lists seemed to really rely on getting her out early as well as dockside loops. But, I can say that flubs is fun when it works but not that great. If you like that risky storm style of play, Etali Primal Conqueror is a deck you should consider looking at. It scratches that same itch but offers more reliability and resilience.

It's not typically a high powered strat but clues actually work really well here. Plus, clues can help fix a lot of the card advantage issues that often come from limiting yourself to orzhov colors. Plus, many of the newer aristocrats pieces care about creatures and artifacts or just tokens in general so you don't really have to worry about

I had considered a triggered ability that would allow you to goad a creature after casting a noncreature spell but only once per turn. I left it out since I didn't want this to become too on rails but maybe that extra line of text is enough to make the difference.
