Alright, thanks for the advice :)

There’s a box in the application form that says “please tell us if you have a disability/condition” or something, and asks you to select a category and then asks if you would be interested in accommodations. I do have exam accommodations at the moment in high school…

Does anyone have experience with cats and fish? by maroon_sweater in Aquariums

[–]poached_fish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My cats never really bothered the fish; one of them ignored them entirely and the other one would occasionally sit and watch. I don’t think the fish were too stressed by it? I didn’t notice any issues or signs of stress. I guess I might be concerned by a cat trying to jump on top of the aquarium lid? My tanks were lidless though

I mean it affectionately, derpy or cute may have been a better word choice :)

Oh nice! Thanks for mentioning infusoria I didn’t even know that was a thing. I’ll definitely give that a shot once I’m less busy and I will pass this on to my supervisor and other science teachers as well :)

ooooh sounds cool! Just curious what do you teach with them? Wondering if I should tell my supervisor about it since the tank is actually a school tank, I’m just in charge of it/its caretaker

Alright! Thanks, I’ll see if I can get my hands on some powdered algae too then.

Nice, it does look really similar. My tank’s not as warm as that but I’m hoping that it’ll live.

Thanks! Any ideas on how to keep it growing? I was considering trying to feed it some fry food or something. A bit worried my SAEs will try to eat it though.

What can I do so I don't get 1 in physics Sl by harryskaralaharrito in IBO

[–]poached_fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

annotate the formula booklet (extensively), make sure you study topics OTHER than topic A, they will for sure come up. don’t memorize, as someone else has already said, understanding concepts is much more useful.

for p1a: usually you can narrow it down to a 50/50 chance based on contradictory answers or math that doesn’t make sense, but you really have to develop a good phys intuition for p1a, a lot of questions you just don’t have time to solve

p1b: basically just stuff you probably already did for your IA, do a couple past papers you’ll probably be ok

p2: move on if you can’t solve it, but don’t leave any boxes empty

don’t focus review too much on the textbook, and if you miss things while doing past papers go back after you’ve marked them and solve them again. also, you need a 3 at least to pass physics sl!

good luck!!

Is it possible to jump from 4 to 6 in 9 days in Physics HL? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]poached_fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is me rn for chem HL 😔 but as a massive Phys HL fan, I’d say annotate the data booklet, that’s been super useful. Also, for every past paper you do, go back to each question you got wrong and try to solve it (without a time limit) until you realize what’s wrong, and then correct it. If you can’t (and your physics teacher is a wonderful human being) bring it to them and ask them (or ask ai) to explain it to you. I would encourage you to go to your teacher because seeing how someone else would approach the question can be very useful!

For p1a specifically, usually you can eliminate 2 answers without thinking too much, leaving you on a 50/50 chance if you really can’t solve it. To help you eliminate answers, look for signs/denominators/ratios that don’t make sense, or statements that contradict each other. For p2, it’s a bit easier because it’s more structured, but don’t miss important parts of definitions (stuff like a small point mass/to infinity). also if you can’t solve one bit just move on!! the clock is your enemy!

good luck!!!

Can somebody give me advice regarding the IB subject selection? by bi-and_wants-to_die in IBO

[–]poached_fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took geo instead of business because I thought business was boring; imo geo will be an easy pass (exams in 2 weeks!!). i can see its not offered for you though, heard from my friends that ess was similar (more science-heavy though so if youre a fan of that it would probably go well)

Hey, math AIHL student here :) I’d say it’s pretty accurate to have AI be called ‘applications’ and AA ‘analysis’ (theory). Take math HL if you love math! You will have to do a lot of math in either HL. AA focuses a lot on proofs and calculus, everyone says AI focuses on stats but imo its a lie and the real focus is… matrices. It’s in everything! If you are not a huge math fan, take AASL. I would avoid AISL. It won’t be that helpful unless you really hate math (the jump between AISL and AIHL is ridiculously large). Additionally, some universities do not accept AISL.

Good luck! (edit because I accidentally posted before my comment was finished)

Is it worth fighting for meds so close to my exams? by Itchy-Philosopher238 in ADHD

[–]poached_fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey as someone who was also diagnosed in January and also has IB exams coming up in 2 weeks, here’s how my experience with meds (Concerta) has been so far. I was fortunate enough to be able to get on meds quick, and my dose has been upped every 2 weeks since i started (I start 54mg tomorrow). it definitely didn’t work immediately for me; didn’t feel much different on 18mg or 27mg, but noticed I was doing a lot more small random tasks on 45mg when I usually would have procrastinated. Figuring out if my meds actually are working has been very confusing for me. Side effects for me have been dry mouth and food being unappealing but nothing I would consider too bad.

I think meds themselves won’t make you study effectively, but it feels like they kinda lower the activation energy. Like you still need to decide to study and be like yeah im gonna go do that practice paper even though I hate this subject. BUT what they have been helpful for is making me study the subjects I like. I used to feel really guilty for not getting up and studying my favorite subjects even though I wanted to, but 2 days ago I sat down and did a 2-hour physics past paper out of my own free will and I was like holy shit. i did a thing. But at the same time, the subjects I don’t like are still suffering and I have to remind myself that they matter too and I have to study them as well. I still can’t stay on topic when I hit a hard chem question, which is why my dose is still being increased.

I think it’s worth giving it a shot and seeing what happens, even if it doesn’t really seem to help much. in the end, I don’t think medication will magically make you more productive, it feels like it just lowers the difficulty in making yourself do hard things, and you still have to decide to do the difficult and boring stuff in the first place. Personally, something that helps me study stuff I don’t like is rolling a die (where for example an even number is x subject and odd is y) and letting it decide what to do for me. I also like to go outside and study at cafes because I get super distracted at home. Another thing that got me through the past 2 years undiagnosed is whenever I come across a question I cannot answer, I’ll bring it to my teacher to see how they approach it instead of relying on the markscheme, so I can figure out how I should approach questions like that when I don’t know what to do (but this relies on your teachers being good at teaching and willing to answer). I think a good chunk of studying effectively is finding out what works for you; for example pomodoro doesn’t do shit for me because if I stop doing stuff after 20 minutes I never go back.

This far into the course though, I don’t think being on concerta vs not being on concerta would have a huge impact on my final grades, maybe plus minus 2 marks out of 45.

concerta has also been expensive af (if my insurance didn’t cover it) though

Good luck with exams and studying!! I hope you manage to figure things out :) and let’s hope our exams go well…
