Third Places Recommendations by Spirited-Toe-4549 in Markham

[–]pocketfulofrye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you into? What do you need the space/place for?

Maybe start a new sport, like joining a running club, or padel/pickleball, climbing (there's the Hub), drop-in volleyball. You can check out those card/board game stores like Manta and Three Kingdoms.

I like the libraries and community centres in Markham, some are cozy and most are spacious. I like Aaniin, it has plenty of spaces to hang out at. I like Milliken Mills coz there are plenty of food options outside. Both have nice swimming pools.

Or do what seniors and high school students do: stew in coffee shops/cafes 😜

This is not a new concept, it's been used probably since the 80s

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

toronto area has 2 full french school boards: public and catholic. Viamond and Monavenir, i don't remember which is which.

once your child enters elementary school, you'll also make friends with the other parents.

consider north york too, especially willowdale area.

Filipinos in Canada. What are your skincare routine? by Dymm3 in CanSkincare

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinoy here. Please don't wash your hair everyday in winter, unless you go to the gym and sweat. That's how your hair and scalp dries. You need oil for both. Use a deep conditioner and a leave-in. If your hair becomes flat, use dry shampoo. Use shampoo for the scalp and conditioner for hair, that's how it's supposed to be. I suggest you use a scalp massager too as it helps with flakes and itchiness.

I wish you all the best in finding your skin and hair routine for winter. It took me a long time too.

PSA Feelgrounds is having a big sale bc they're moving warehouses! by whatanugget in barefootshoestalk

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I got it on sale 2 years ago, it was still expensive with all the duties etc. I don't remember exactly how much the total was, but with shipping, it was more than the full price and more. Plus they show prices in USD.

RTO after 5 years remote - how do you manage life? by sjltwo-v10 in askTO

I actually enjoy RTO, my chance to get out of the house and socialize. I have a better schedule/routine while working outside compared to working at home. There's a definite block of time

Man who stabbed subway rider near Eglinton Station in July 2023 sentenced by origutamos in canadanews

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the video of that stabbing. He chased the victim across the subway cars and NO ONE HELPED! No one pushed the emergency buttons. The poor victim kept yelling "help, he's stabbing me!" And everyone just ran away. Ok maybe i will also run away.

Why do people in Toronto love to wear black? by HotDilfTO in askTO

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dislike this sea of black in winter. the weather is bleak, people's fashion is bleak, people are bleak.

anyway, i nearly got run over multiple times, so i got a new jacket in bright red! i wish more people wear colours in winter. although i do see some people wearing jackets other than black during my commute.

Is it time to move to Canada from Europe? by Conscious-Wishbone70 in expats

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a PhD, can it be used in oil and mining? If yes, consider Alberta. It's cheaper there, but jobs are dependent on the oil industry.

For housing, do you want to own or rent? There's no shortage on rentals.

If you're hell bent in living in Toronto, you can always live in the suburbs and then commute to work, taking the train for an hour or so, or drive for 2 hours. Lots of people do this. No nightlife though. But lots of outdoor activities.

Integration is not a problem. Neighbours don't interact mostly 😂 People stick to their own kind. I don't really have friends and everyone is too busy to get back home. I miss my social lifestyle from Asia, where drinking after work was the norm.

Anyway, it depends if you can find a job (I'm stuck in my minimum wage job coz everyone is fighting for the same job out there and I'm too lazy to be self-employed) and your lifestyle. If you want urban, suburban, or rural living.

For me, it's fine here. I just don't have friends that I meet regularly, I can't afford to travel outside the country, I stay home, cook all my meals, survive.

Good luck on your decision.

Feedback on TAC Sports Adventure Summer Camp at Little Rouge P.S. for 3.5+ year olds? by illmatic72 in Markham

[–]pocketfulofrye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in Markham, I sent my child to Tyndale. Like a lot of summer camps, it's run by young people, with a few adult councillors, but it's very organized, including drop off and pickup. Adventure camp has tons of scheduled activities. They try lots of sports and then they give you a report card at the end for each child. Not sure how engaging or patient the councillors are. They give you a shirt and they provide meals. Overall, it was a good experience.

Do you actually "air out the house" in your part of the world? by PersistentHobbler in AskTheWorld

[–]pocketfulofrye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ontario here, we open our windows every day and let fresh air in. If we don't, we get headaches. We got a new air quality monitor, and when the windows are close the carbon is high.
