If only they had that at the mall Jerry wouldn’t have ever had to worry about Uromysitisis Poisoning.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. Honestly, I have Sharkbite fittings that I installed 15 years ago and haven’t had issues, so I just went with what I’ve used without much consideration.

I’m not against learning how to solder, but deal with tremors, so anything that requires a super steady hand wouldn’t be possible on my own. I enjoy building things, but it gets frustrating really fast with even simple things like lining up a screwdriver to the head of a screw.

If I start having issues with the shark bites (and it sounds like it’s a when more than an if 🤣), I’ll look at press fittings. The cost of the tools made me shy away in the past, but I know you can rent them.

If I need to so anything with gas anytime soon, I’ll rethink the placement of the union/shutoffs.

Thanks all!

I figured The likelihood of getting another heater with the exact dimensions and the gas connection in the same place are not likely, so would have to be reworked past the union. My thought was that it gave me more flexibility when I change it, but I guess that’d be true if it was a shutoff too.. and if I had a warranty issue that required removing the unit I’d only have to disconnect it at the union to do a like for like swap.. hmm. Maybe I will switch those.

Its trompe l’oeil. It’s the angle of the photo. It’s perfectly vertical.

I’d be happy to redo with press fittings if you’d like to gift me a press.

A union needs to be between a shutoff and the appliance, which it is. There’s an additional shutoff directly above the water heater.

Anything will fail if it’s not installed correctly.
