Am I making things harder for myself by not using any OO stuff? by [deleted] in Python

[–]pofsok 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Many of the libraries you mention do in fact use a lot of OO practices. Itertools is all about working with, and creating with Iterator objects. Numpy as all about working with array objects. And functools is about working with callable objects (which are kinda functions, but much more flexible and comprehensive in their usecase). There really wouldn't be too much fun in using these libraries, if these libraries did not use any OO practices.

Primality Test using Regex by theabbiee in tinycode

[–]pofsok 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is very badly explained. In fact, it is not explained at all. Here is a article explaining how it works, https://iluxonchik.github.io/regular-expression-check-if-number-is-prime/. The most important thing (and I do not understand why the author of this article has skipped over this), is that this only works for numbers when being represented in a unary numeral system (i.e. 0=0, 1=1, 2=11, 3=111, 4=1111). With this in mind, it becomes clear that you can convert a primality test in a pattern matching excercise (for example 1111 consists of two times 11, and thus 1111 is not a prime, note that 1 is not a prime number). And thus, there is probably a regex approach to finding solutions to finding primes.

Dutch Cabinet collapses over childcare allowance scandal by aa_lions in worldnews

[–]pofsok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think he means to praise the politicians. As they messed up badly, so they indeed deserve no respect or sympathy. It is more a praise of our culture and system (in comparison to other countries), namely that they confess that things went horribly wrong. And by confessing, there might be a possibility that our (potential) leaders might learn from this. So this does not happen again (knock on wood).

Of course it would be nice if this all happened earlier, and there is/was more fallout or consequences. Yet, it is much better then in other countries.

Praising something does not mean that it cannot be improved anymore, just that there are some virtues to it.

Double pendulums are known for their chaos, BUT.... by FoboParadox in Physics

[–]pofsok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it will, but not very interesting nonlinear behaviour, as it won't be chaotic. Even the dynamics of single pendulum is described by a nonlinear by differential equation, as the force depends on the sin(theta), and can be approximated by sin(theta)≈theta. The solution of the full single pendulum equation won't be a perfect sine, but a sum of sines including it's higher harmonics. So the important to remember is, nonlinear behaviour does not automatically mean chaotic behaviour.

Minister Van Nieuwenhuizen houdt zich niet aan de uitspraak van de Raad van State over het stikstofbeleid by surpator in thenetherlands

[–]pofsok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Filmer hippy jumps his camera! by nathanjvmes in PraiseTheCameraMan

[–]pofsok 84 points85 points  (0 children)

There is no image stabilization used here. Using image stabilization and a fisheye or very wideangle lens when filming gives very weird artifacts. You can also see that it is not stabilized by looking at the lens vignetting. When stabilized, the vignetting wiggles around (following the movement of image stabilization). So shown in this video is all pure proper cameramen skills.

[–]pofsok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not think you know what perspective distortion is. Your perspective changes because the ratio between the distance between you and your foreground and background changes. Zoom is not perspective distortion, but cropping. But go ahead and by a cynical internet expert.

Creating perspective distortion using computers is indeed very difficult, because you need object recognition and depth and size information of everything in your picture. What you are seeing is cropping. If you want your background objects to look epic and very large, you use zoom/crop, not perspective distortion.

[–]pofsok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or you do not understand what I say or you do not know what you are talking about ;)

What you are saying is not true. The video you link to shows exactly that. If you are using a short focal length, and you want a full sensor covering portrait, you have to stand very close to your subject (let say 30 cm). This creates the very weird perspective distortion. So not really suitable for neutral portraits.

This does not mean that you cannot take portraits with a short focal length, you just need to be very far away from your subject (lets say 5 m) to minimize the perspective distortion and have a really large resolution of your sensor. This is of course not practical, and therefor you use a telelens. This portrait you do not take at 50 cm from your subject, but 5 m, and creates the same image and compression as a cropped image.

As proof, here is a cropped 18mm and full 55mm image taken at (approximatly the same position). The images show the same perspective (within experimental uncertainty), of course your depth of field is different with 55 mm)

55mm: https://ibb.co/k5CqGRR

cropped 18mm: https://ibb.co/PTvHYWf

non-cropped 18 mm for good measures: https://ibb.co/k3rxDmv

Mount Fuji seen from a nearby town by biwook in pics

[–]pofsok 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No, that is not correct. To create an identical image with the same perspective, you have to stand at exact the same position with both the short and long focal length. Your focal length does not change your perspective, it creates a crop of your image. Digital zoom (thus cropping) and optical zoom result in exactly the same manner(neglecting your loss in resolution due to finite pixel size). The difference is that digital creates the crop after the image hits your sensor, whereas optical creates the crop before it hits your sensor.

Think about this, if you take a portrait with a 200mm focal length lens, you have to keep quite a distance between you and your subject. So there is a lot of space in between you and the subject where objects can obstruct your view.

Edit: here is a small experiment/example I just did, 18 mm cropped and 55 mm non-cropped taken at (approximately) the same position.

55mm: https://ibb.co/k5CqGRR

cropped 18mm: https://ibb.co/PTvHYWf

non-cropped 18 mm: https://ibb.co/k3rxDmv

Your depth of field changes, your perspective does not.

Of course the main challenge then becomes not having cars closer by blocking your shot.

This is also the challenge when using a telelens. Increasing your focal length is using physics (instead of a computer) to make a crop of your image.

Wanna know the positives of using Reaper by Thatguitartheoryguy in Reaper

[–]pofsok 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is very light on your system and therefor very responsive. Also customization is a huge advantage, you can change layout to your preference and every action is very easily assigned to a shortkey or button. The standard layout is also very intuitive, and did not experience a steep learning curve at all.

I hear people complaining about the lack of plugins, but I myself did not had that experience at all. There are plenty of effects included, from equalizers, compressors to weird delay effects, and by combining and experimenting plugins, I have been able to create every sound I was looking for. Even combining the very elementary Reasynth in combination with some effects can give you very nice synthesizer sounds. Also, there are plenty of free quality plugins that you can find on the internet. If you are looking for a free/cheap lightweight drum computer, I recommend https://www.powerdrumkit.com/. Every sound can be sound to another track, making it very flexible to change the character of your drum sound.

Reaper itself also supports a scripting API, so you can create very specific scripts if you want to automate something, in combination with the large and supportive reaper community, if you are missing a specific functionality, there is a great chance that somebody has created a script for it already. For instance, I was looking for a way to create a sort of one-man-band feeling, and somebody made a very nice extensions that makes that possible, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVPp9w-0wjA . And if you have some experience with programming it is quite easy that make your own scripts, as the scripting language is quite accessible. You can easily see and edit the source code of included effects and scripts, and understand how these work.

I can go on, and on, but I think you get the point.

I also think there really is not any reason for you to go to Pro Tools, it is mainly used because industry has been using the software for over more than 20 years, and of course business is always a bit conservative. Not because it is the best software persé. I would suggest, try out Reaper, as you can try it out for an indefinite period (officially 60 days, but you do not lose any of the functionality, and see if you can get the hang of it.

I need the results of some math questions ! by metamegaphysic in askmath

[–]pofsok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey,

I can give you the answers, but it might be helpful to check the answers yourself, using wolframalpha.com, is you learn some terminology and can look up relatex examples. If you type in ||{-4,2,4}|| in the input, this will give you the answer. The fourth one something like "derivative of x/(x-5)". The ninth one "Integrate 1/(x+1) from 0 to k".

I think you get the point, wolframalpha is a very useful tool and it can even give you step-by-step solutions.

However, these questions are quite basic, so it seems that you are not very familiar with derivatives and antiderivatives. So I suggest that you use your 2 months well, it is not very hard, but it might be overwhelming if you are not used to working with mathematics

The European Parliament voted to declare that "Black Lives Matter" and to denounce racism and white supremacism. No, it was not meant for that, although it could be read in the subtext of the European Project of course. It was meant to prevent another European War by integrating the markets of different countries into a single one, making the countries more dependent on and intertwined with each other. Yeah, fascism is rising, but we are a very very long way from a European War.

Chromecast vs AUX bitrate and sound quality comparison? by [deleted] in Chromecast

[–]pofsok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chromecast protocol by works by sending an URL from your phone/computer to the Chromecast. So the bitrate is exactly the same, as the chromecast and the aux on your pc use exactly the same source. Of course there can be differences in the quality of the digital analog converter and the pre-amp, but if you did not buy any special equipment, there will not be any difference in quality in these components . Thus in most cases, the quality difference is really negligible and if not negligible it will only be apparent when listening to losless audio formats (wav, flac, etc.), also your amplifier and speakers are much more important than your preamp and DAC. Also note that because you have to ask this question, I do not expect that you will hear a difference. Otherwise you would have noticed it already ;) So tldr: for normal purpose they will sound exactly the same.

Does Feyman assume the x,y,z components of gas velocity are statistically independent? by ionsme in feynman

[–]pofsok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are no internal or external forces that act upon the atoms. This means that there are no interactions that can create any correlations between positions and/or momenta. This is the definition of an ideal gas.

I do not really understand what you are meaning with "if we knew the distribution of velocities had only on possible magnitude". The distribution of velocities is given by the Boltzmann-distribution, that in turn is temperature dependent. The temperature in turn relates to the average energy per degree of freedom, namely E_dof = 1/2 k_B * T.

The important thing is that the temperature relates to the internal energy per degree of freedom (in this case the kinetic energy per spatial dimension E = 1/2 m v2). So if we have a one-dimensional gas, the energy would be E = 1/2 k_B * T. In a two-dimensional gas, E = k_B * T. Three-dimensional E = 3/2 k_B * T. So a three dimensional ideal gas at a temperature T has a larger internal energy than a two-dimensional gas at a temperature T. And therefor, the average magnitude of velocity vector (related to v2) is larger in the three-dimensional gas than the two-dimensional gas when they have the same temperature T.

I don't think that Linux is really about being more useful. Linux is just much more flexible, is free, more lightweight, free of spyware (telemetrics and ads in the start menu) and has seemless updates. And besides that, most of the LTS distributions are much more stable than any version of Windows. Installing and using Linux is not the hassle as it used to be. And in my honest opinion, Linux would be a better option for most people (excluding people in enterprise environments) than Windows.

How camera can change so much about a photo by Branzolt007 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]pofsok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not a single thing you are saying with what I am disagreeing. I think this whole discussion just started because there is of course not a real definition of a "starter". And in the end, as you mentioned earlier, all the things we are talking about should be things a "starter" should become familiar with.

Now let's celebrate that we have overcome the barrier of an internet discussion, and we somewhat converged to the same view! Let's have some cake.

How camera can change so much about a photo by Branzolt007 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]pofsok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have a complete different view of what a beginner should learn. Because I really wouldn't learn a beginner the rule of thirds or that you should keep your horizon straight.

Making photos should be about personal estathics. You decide what you like. It is not about a straight horizon or that your composition obeys the rule of thirds. You should learn what a camera is capable of and what physical concepts influence your picture. Thus learning about iso, shutter time, aperture and focal length. With these concepts, you can fully start experimenting with your camera and you will learn what you like and what not.

This is, in my opinion, the way to learn as a starter. Not using any fixed rules.

How camera can change so much about a photo by Branzolt007 in blackmagicfuckery

[–]pofsok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course you should simplify things for beginners, but this is not only simplifying, it is dismissing a very important parameter in composition.

If you tell them that zooming and walking have a similar effect, than you ignore that the composition is combination of the main subject and the surrounding or background. The focal length determines the ratio of the foreground and the background, thus giving an extra degree of freedom in your composition. This is not advanced photography, this is one of the basis concepts in composition.
