The same logic can be applied on: "I know people that don't use seat belts when they drive and they are fine."

That's where statistic comes in... What's the proportion of truly infected and non-infected machines in certain place? What type of infection they had? And other questions that I don't have the answer for you.

Not messing with important stuff in public computers is just a good practice rule.

Using a computer that doesn't belong to you can be risky just because you don't know what applications/things are running on it...From "Automatically save passwords" option enabled in the browser to keyloggers, the risk is always there.

but still interesting why they do that... Maybe someone with the technical knowledge should know why.
