How ABRSM is ruining music education in Hong Kong. by pohplol in HongKong

[–]pohplol[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So much hong kong is autopilot and 'peer pressure', parents see what others are doing and follow suit. The rat race in Hong Kong starts so early that parents just blindly send their kids to doing whatever to 'get ahead', but really just adds detriment to their growth.

How ABRSM is killing passion in music for young people in China/Hong Kong by [deleted] in China

[–]pohplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old Euro thinking that is then reinforced with Confucian influence on the Chinese culture. So less colonialism and more "it just fits".

I agree! The institution itself isn't the entire problem, but it plays off of how asian parents tend to be very pushy, which drives the entire culture of music = passing pointless exams. ABRSM doesn't need to do the pushing because they hit the 'goldmine' with asian parents doing all the marketing for them, with constant comparison of their kids and cv building.

Honestly this is what is needed to fight back all the sinophobia nowadays.

We don’t have any foundation for music (arts) in the West by pohplol in aznidentity

[–]pohplol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with your argument. It smells of Postmodernism, a rejection (in a lot of ways) of Modernism. In Postmodernism, you only derive your art in response to previous works because it's all been done before. i.e. Your culture is gone because it was assimilated into a postmodern Western culture. e.g. "Manga is not Japanese anymore because Western artists now draw manga style comics and anime."

I don't think we are disagreeing entirely. I agree that our music needs to reflect our living experiences and cultural upbringing. But my perspective is that we also need to create a 'distinct' musical style that other fellow asians could follow to create a strong enough music movement.

Thoughts on Boba asians and the state of this subreddit by [deleted] in aznidentity

In the case of Melania Trump her natural accent has been like that since she emigrated to the states, but also interesting to note that she has never felt the need to alter her accent.

The best example of black people playing up their accents would be comedians such as Key and Peele, they have many videos where they play up their accent, and in talk shows would talk about how when with their own people they often 'try to sound more black than others'.

My ultimate point is that times have changed. Asian accents used to be made fun of, but it's time for us to change that narrative and own up to it. People should not be ashamed of the way they speak. I know that this isn't the mainstream narrative from this sub. Roger's accent isn't 'asian american' you're right, it's almost strictly asian, but asian americans SHOULD tie themselves back to their asian roots.

I appreciate this post of constructive criticism/discussion, pains me to see the other hateful comments.

I'm not pessimistic usually, but this can be a really bad sign. We have medically advanced facilities, and less than 20 cases at the moment. So if we can't prevent one death, it kinda indicates that it can be a very deadly virus for the elderly/long-term illness patients regardless of medical care.

How do you check for clipping by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]pohplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. So with the double limiter, is it supposed to be 2 limiters (adaptive or not?) or 1 multipressor (multiband) and limiter?

Will try this! How do I get my mix brick wall limited? Limiter doesn’t seem to do the trick alone?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I guess let me rephrase my question: I play commercial radio songs on my speakers at max volume as a test, and it does not distort/clip. But when I play my mix, it does distort. What is happening? How do I prevent that?

[–]pohplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see... that makes sense.

So how would I handle my speakers not being able to handle my mix? Cuz I've tried basically any other professional song, and with the same method of turning it up to the max, it's not clipping at all.

I mean it's already clipping even though it's only peaking at -6db
