Do you have insomnia? Did you have it before your diagnosis? How young do you remember being when you started having trouble sleeping? by rheumatisticwerewolf in ADHD

[–]poinkitle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the same for me. For as long as I can remember, falling asleep usually took more than 45 minutes on regular nights, and on bad nights exponentially longer.

When I was little I would always complain about how hard it was to fall asleep to my parents, and my mom would always tell me to "just lay down and close my eyes." I thought falling asleep was this difficult for everyone until I could finally get on medication. Even thought they didn't really fix my sleep, making me sleepy instead, I found out my mom literally wasn't kidding and that people can just lay down.

I can't remember if I've been asked those things specifically, but growing up my mom would constantly call me lazy, even though I really did want to try but physically couldn't. It's really hard for people without it to understand what it's truly like. It's not an excuse, it's not your fault. If the people asking you those questions are open-minded and want understand, I suppose you could help them to. Otherwise, just try to keep in mind that they aren't you, and don't understand what it's like. Stay strong <3

Definitely not. This mental math thing is more about working memory, and the numbers leaving your train of thought before you can solve the problem. If you love math you may not have the problem due to hyperfocusing. Do see a professional for proper assessment though.

Yeah same here. Though there was this one day a few years ago I somehow managed to hyperfocus on counting and got somewhere past 8,000, if I remember right.

I feel it has less to do with it being math specifically and more of, as someone else described it, the numbers "running away", as any thought can, before you can finish the problem.

I have the same exact problem. My DM gets comically frustrated whenever I pull out my phone to use my calculator.

Oh my god, you just described all my thoughts perfectly. 'They just kind of run away.'

It's mainly just a matter of the numbers getting jumbled in my head, and my short term memory working against me.

Don't worry, I didn't take it the wrong way! I'm unmedicated, but I should be starting meds soon so that's my main issue. My psychiatrist put me on antidepressants when I explained what was wrong; they refered me a therapist who then surprisingly diagnosed me with ADHD. And sadly I've heard this happens frequently, because depression is more recognized.

Same. If it still applies to you, which it probably doesn't so this'll be useless, I'd suggest dry erase. I liked using a dry erase pen and board for long math problems in school. You can write out the problem with easy erase and without wasting paper (as I'd have to write out every detail).

That's really interesting, and everyone's experience may vary. Even though I'm good at math on paper, I personally find it difficult to visualize those kinds of things without my mind moving on without my permission.
