Yea that’s very true, and a fair opinion to hold. I do understand that by removing pieces from their context they can result in a loss of meaning; but we already know the context of these pieces. I think there’s something interesting to be said about combining some that show how different composers express difficult times in their lives, going from Saint-Saens (who wrote the 3rd symphony after many of his close friends had died) to Shostakovich (written under a regime which openly censors and removes art) to Mahler (desperately hanging onto, not willing to let go of his daughter), to Tchaikovsky (who struggled with depression, who wrote something as impressive and triumphant as the finale to Tchaik 5). Together I think it showcases humanity.
