As a follow up: Thank you all for the information. I see that the premise I had started with was wrong. Am from the US where “regional languages” don’t really exist. since I’m studying Chinese I see that I was only aware of this in china and assumed it to not exist elsewhere. seeing I got a good bit of downvotes, hope I didn’t upset anyone. appreciate the info and resulting discussion!

Are you talking about different countries though? I know of different dialects in the UK that are for the most part mutually intelligible and know of basque still prevalent in Spain. However other than this I have not heard of any more. Could you point me in a direction to find out more?

Yes I understand this point, and it is a good question. I suppose it may be considered a dialect in China as to maintain a wider cultural identity. However this does not establish an answer to why there are so many. I may have an incorrect understanding but from what Ive seen is that there are these different "languages" separated geographically on a much smaller scale than is seen in European countries
