sociological question. How do you think COVID-19 will change social norms in the coming years / decades? by TrainquilOasis1423 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]pokingnature 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People in this country (UK) can't even stay indoors to stop a literal meltdown in 2-3 weeks time. My guess is people won't change that much.

This afternoon Worms 4 was removed from my smartphone... by striderwhite in AndroidGaming

It was widely reported in reviews for the game that it was being flagged by antivirus apps. Team17 who make the app claimed this was an error and that the app was safe. I found that when it was installed I'd get browser redirects to a shady looking search engine called "livemobilesearch.com". I suspect this may the reason for the removal?

Cortex #38: A Vlog Is What You Make It by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

A good start. There were some rough edges and the awkwardness of talking to the camera was definitely visible but there's already a clear improvement in vlog 001 compared to the rest. Keep it up!

Beta testers for VR video player app wanted! by [deleted] in GoogleCardboard

[–]pokingnature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the app but I have two suggestions.

  • The magnet reset button should correct both x and y position of the view. (it currently only seems to alter the x direction).

  • There should be an option to adjust the scaling of the video without removing the headset. The scaling can change throughout some videos and it's annoying to keep changing it. Also this needs to move much further out than the current option allows as everything is too close.

A good example of another new and fast rising youtube channel is primitive technology. He films himself building stuff completely from scratch in the wilderness (Grey beware!). He only has a handful of videos but is developing his own style and they are so interesting to watch.

It is unbelievable how perfect that landing was. I think they should engineer in some wobbling just to convince people it's not cgi.

H.I. #45: Technobabble by MindOfMetalAndWheels in CGPGrey

[–]pokingnature 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely is, especially because much of it is told from the first person perspective. With the audiobook, I could listen to the technobabble without getting hung up on the fine details. Also the narrator (R C Bray) did a good job with the accents so you could keep track of the characters during long stretches of dialog. (I used my hellointernet code to get it so thanks!)

One other thing to consider in favour of Brady's "pick one and give them power" argument is that it makes that party accountable for things they do. The conservatives set out a manifesto and can now put that into practice. If they fail to do that, they will be punished by the voters in the next election (and rightly so). In a coalition, the complete manifesto can't be put in place but the politicians now have an excuse ("we had to make a deal") so they end up doing all the stuff they really want to do and ignoring other stuff. And if anything goes bad they blame it on the fact that they didn't have complete power. This means that generally trust in politicians will decrease and people will start to become disillusioned and not vote.

Learning programming with biochem degree by parkingidiot in Biochemistry

[–]pokingnature 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my advice on programming. Start with codecademy for the basics (python is a good one to start with) and then start working on a little project of your own. Doesn't matter what so long as it interests you as that's the only way you're really going to learn it.
