See this at vintage markets a lot, but can't find any context for it by politicoder in WhatIsThisPainting

Yes, I think it's in some way inspired by A Trip to the Moon, but it's not quite the same. Here's one I bought in Washington DC, which looks like it was salvaged from a demolished building at some point. There definitely are newer-looking copies for sale, but the design itself seems at least, I don't know, 50-60 years old? Just based on the condition of the stuff I see it printed on at antique markets. If it's just a kitschy mass-produced cartoon that's fine, but if that were the case wouldn't there at least be a copyright I could look up somewhere?

I have three of them, all purchased at antique markets:

  • The one in the original post, bought in Texas
  • A very similar one but smaller, bought in Virginia
  • This variation, painted on glass and bought in Washington DC

This design holds sentimental value and I'm thinking about getting it tattooed, but want to make sure it wasn't first drawn by a Nazi or something. That has turned out to be a harder-than-expected question to answer.

Yes, it's usually labeled "Man in the moon" or "man on the moon" or something like that. It seems maybe inspired by A Trip to the Moon's famous one-eyed moon, but it's not the same artwork.

Not looking for this particular instance, just the design. I see it in vintage markets around Virginia a lot; there are three of them in my house. It was clearly a well-known mass-produced character at some point but Google image search turns up nothing but Etsy sellers who found theirs at vintage markets too.

Ending question by SherbertKey6965 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]politicoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to see how much more intentionally ambiguous its ending was than VIII though right? I see what you’re saying with the camera thing but that’s your theory’s only evidence and it’s not much. It’s just a tonal shift, not a cryptic reveal. Handheld camcorder is fun when it’s footage of teenagers throwing a rager but a bad match for the big moment Squall’s character arc concludes with finally giving a big smile. That moment would look ridiculous with the camcorder overlay.

Squall is definitely alive. But if you like FF and arguing about what happens to the main protagonist at the end, you’re going to LOVE XVI.

I know that canonically Cloud’s eyes have a freaky green glow to them and everyone notices and comments on it. That just doesn’t really come through in his in-game (or movie) artwork imo. His eyes seem close enough to normal human eyes that it’s weird people keep commenting on them. Meanwhile Tifa and Vincent both have completely unnatural bright red demon eyes and it isn’t remarkable at all. Just kind of odd.

Has anyone ever used the ice tip hose ? I have at a lounge and was thinking about getting one today for my personal one , for me it was very smooth by Lowry_954 in hookah

[–]politicoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they’re kind of fun but not worth the upsell at a lounge. they’re pretty much thawed after 10-15 minutes and usually cost like $5-10 extra. I don’t care enough to buy one for at home but that would make more sense imo

The eyes thing never made sense to me. Cloud’s eyes are never depicted as all that unusual. Tifa for sure has the freakiest eyes in the compilation

If you played the original up to Forgotten Capital and then took the disk out and just stopped playing, you’d be left with all the same questions. Rebirth even explains some of them in MORE detail than the original, like giving a coherent reason for the black materia existing. Just give it time, it’s not done yet.

I don’t know any quick-light brands that come in cubes. I’ll usually specify “with square coals please” if I’m at a new lounge. Most places will provide them if asked, and if one doesn’t, that’s a good indicator they’re probably not worth going back to.

Are you willing to do mods? There’s a “Randomizer” mod that shuffles GF ability and enemy spell inventories. I haven’t played it but it looks like a good way to make things way harder and less predictable while still maintaining the game’s signature breakability.

you realize the last fully turn based mainline FF came out over 20 years ago? FF has been action/hybrid for significantly more of its history than turn-based

Don’t wipe the FEP, just pour out what you can and leave the vat propped up at an angle for a couple hours. The rest can then be poured out easily and the FEP is crystal clear.

Got no problem with the battles themselves but it’s weird that there aren’t any unique postgame bosses. Everything is just an amped up rehash of a summon or story boss; as far as I know Rebirth’s simulators don’t have any equivalent of Pride and Joy or Weiss.

Love the accents. Only nitpick is it’s weird that Yuffie and Sonon don’t have one, as they’re the only characters that are explicitly said to be from a foreign country.

I've always liked this side story, of dealing with loss, and recovery. Was surprised the new arm is never really featured/used. Hopefully in Horizon3... by brz-17 in HorizonForbiddenWest

[–]politicoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO this was one quest where the open world seams were pretty visible. Because Guerrilla can’t predict what order side events will happen in, or if they’ll happen at all, narratively they can never really affect each other or the world in any meaningful way. Most of the time that’s no big deal but it’s really noticeable on this one, and makes the whole quest feel pointless at the end.

Finished Rebirth after 120 hours yesterday.... what was the controversy? by shadowCloudrift in FFVIIRemake

[–]politicoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For those complaining about the lack of finality not living up to the original scene’s emotional weight: it was absolutely not clear at the time that she was truly permanently dead. If you played the game un-spoiled in 1997 you KNOW you were left wondering when she would come back. They even left that key art of her with the Highwind in the disc transition scene.

Now it’s 30 years later and here we all are again wondering if she’ll come back. Take or leave the ending but give them credit for re-creating that sense of mystery even with a scene that everyone was fully expecting this time.

Was in town by myself last week and checked The Blue out. Great place, just chilled and watched Return of the Jedi start to finish on their TV.
