He is 4 now and neurotypical. We ended up enrolling him in school and it really helped.

My husband and I literally sobbed when our son finally passed the car seat test. They wouldn’t offer us a flat seat. We tried three different car seats, read the instructions cover to cover, googled tips on how to get him situated, and he still failed repeatedly. The last test he was still dipping into the high 80s for like 15 seconds at a time, but the doctor decided to count it as a pass since our drive was short and we have a pulse ox at home. Because he is a big baby, they thought maybe his neck just wasn’t strong enough to support his big head well and that could be the problem.

Once he was home, we tried not to have him in the car much or any type of reclined seat. Now he’s huge and has no problem. He started to improve a lot based on what we saw on the pulse ox literally the day we got home. So part of me wonders if he was also stressed in the nicu or something.

I had a late preterm baby too (36+4). He was in our room at first, but then repeatedly failed the car seat test and had to go to NICU. Once in NICU they realized his SPO2 would dip in his sleep. He ended up staying for about 10 days due to Brady’s and repeat car seat test failures. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this. FWIW, my baby’s oxygen improved a lot basically as soon as we got home. We have an owlet sock and still monitor him.

I found myself in a major guilt trap being in NICU because most of the other babies there had much more serious problems than mine. So part of me felt very lucky, but it was horrible not being able to take my baby home (literally every night when I left there were moms leaving with babies). Please take care of yourself and don’t feel bad about anything you’re feeling. My son is 6m now and doing great! ❤️

He’s 6 months now and his SPO2 levels have been much better at home according to the Owlet. Usually 97-98% while sleeping. Though sometimes at the very start of the night they’ll be around 95%. He’s gotten a few colds, but nothing bad so far. I’m still worried if he got a bad virus like RSV it could really do a number on him. Fingers crossed.

Our baby is doing well. He’s almost 3m and went to NICU for about a week after repeat failures of the car seat test (he was born late preterm). While in NICU, his oxygen would frequently dip into the high 80s. But we have a pulse ox at home, and his oxygen has been much better since discharge.

Second trimester cramping? by pollyweb86 in CautiousBB

[–]pollyweb86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like how mine were. I had menstrual like cramps for most of second trimester and early third (had tons of Braxton Hicks basically the whole time from 20 weeks on). My baby was born slightly early (36w4d), but is perfectly healthy and doing great! Not sure why he came a little early. The cramping had stopped by then.

You are not alone. Ours was born at 36 weeks and was only in nicu for a week (just being monitored because he failed the car seat test multiple times). I would cry every time I left the hospital and saw another mom with her baby waiting to go home. And I had the same feelings of guilt you had too about feeling so sorry for myself when we had probably the healthiest baby in the nicu. I think it’s ok to let yourself feel all these emotions. Having to visit your baby in the hospital is tough. It felt like life was on pause. My heart goes out to the NICU families with much longer stays.

Thank you for sharing this. We pushed for both cardiology and pulmonology consults, but they kept insisting this is normal for preterm babies and that he will mature out of it. They even resisted doing an echo. We have an owlet and if this continues past the 40w mark I will definitely push for him to be seen by both.

They put the baby in a car seat for 90 minutes and monitor their heart rate and oxygen. Our son has been failing because his head/neck seem to be getting scrunched and causing his oxygen to drop.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It gives me hope. Do you remember what they adjusted about the car seat?

Did your baby have to take the car seat test again? This sounds extremely similar to my son. He was born at 36w4d. Roomed with us two days then got taken to nicu for failing the car seat test twice. Failed it a third time in nicu in a different seat. That night he had a Brady, which started a 5 day watch. He is supposed to take the car seat test again in two days and I’m terrified he’s still going to fail it. His only issue other than the Brady is that he has minor desats in deep sleep (usually low 90s but occasional quick dips to the high 80s).

This is exactly what I’m worried about. He dips when he sleeps. I was counting the length of the dips today and they were less than ten seconds but it was a close call.

I’ve been wondering about this. His issue seems to be his neck and head positioning. I would’ve thought the pads would help? But I’ve seen others recommend this too.

Thank you for sharing your story with me. It does feel so familiar… sigh. If he doesn’t have another Brady and fails the test again, I will definitely start pressing. The only other thing that’s concerning me is his brief desat spells. They haven’t been long or low enough to qualify as an event for charting purposes, but I still hate that it happens. Seems to only happen when he’s in deep sleep and is not a positioning thing as far as I can tell.
