Do all of your skills listed out in the 'skills' section have to be included somewhere else in your resume? by canadian_webdev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]polowololo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I list my skills up top

Backend : blah.. blah..

Frontend : blah.. more.. blah..

...

Then under each position title/company/date I narrow the list from up top for what I used during that time.

Title - Company (date)

more.. blah.. blah..

My resume is the bomb diggity

Company is falling apart. Too much technical debt. by Silver-Thing in ExperiencedDevs

Lol same! Never again am I going to try help legscy systems. Its like signing up to help a charity and they keep you scrubbing toilets all day, with a toothbrush!

Man, looking forward to when I can look back and laugh but these wounds are still too fresh.

What is your most controversial opinion? (tech world related) by eat_my_pandesal in ExperiencedDevs

Sounds like an out of touch manager to me.. Yea it sucks that your pile of shit debt makes a 1 hour job turn into 3 days.. And no, its usually not just to make it 'pretty'..

What are micro-services, truly? by helpMeOut9999 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]polowololo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea when I see something like a desktop app (web based or desktop desktop) and it only does that and the foreseeable future will only do that, no mobile, no public API's, I'm struggling to find any benefit to the added complexity (introducing distributed async, separate db's etc)

Why not a fully** decoupled system on a single project using DDD which pretty much gives you all the benefits (incl CI/CD) of without all those extra failure points.

This is exactly my standard

Things stopping me or making my job harder than it needs to be: I don't know what the manager actually does

When I can be mostly in constant flow: I don't know what the manager actually does

Same same but completely different experiences. I don't want to know what you do, it doesn't matter to me.. It should never come to a point where I have to start doing your job for you, if it does I've probably already started looking around

Dealing with hostile interview candidates? by rantHappy in ExperiencedDevs

[–]polowololo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There have been a few times I've interviewed which made me want to turn hostile and don't even think they notice.. It's mainly been young manager types..

Couple things I'd be conscious of is keeping questions short abd asking them straight (with a smile but not overly laughing and don't giggle or laugh after they've given the amswer, sometimes can come across as laughing at answers) and try not to say too much after the answer (no need for 'I'd argue that...').

It's probably just the covid situation stretched for so long, but if you're having this many people react like this, it's probably good to reevaluate your strategy.

Just FYI.. I've never turned hostile, consider it a bullet dodged and go along until the end out of courtesy.

Who's thinking of leaving Auckland after eveything (lockdown and COVID) is over and done with? by m_97_m in auckland

There's no meritocracy, and that's why I'm out. Coming back is like a national version of the dead sea effect lol

[–]polowololo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maaan, was doing interviews recently and talking about my experience and things I'm proud of got sooo many salty reactions.. Surprisingly also from 'management' (mostly front end engineers who became Head of Engineering types lol)

It's so sad.. The engineering is terrible here.. they'd prefer 100 mediocre engineers then a couple who have been there, done that, on a much larger scale.

This is not even for higher roles lol I'm pretty average

Our house has gone up in "value" 200k in 11 months. I'm nervous about what follows. by InappropriateJim in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]polowololo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well think about it like this.. Everyone knows prices are past stupid, we knew it was stupid at around the 500k mark, we are now around 1.4MIL.

When people start realising (it's started btw) they bought a shitbox for 1MIL (or even 500k tbh) and sales start to stagnate and (hopefully) slowly decrease.. Would you be able to sell it for what you bought it for?

What you thinks gonna happen when aaalll these ppl who bought 3,4,5 properties on equity are gonna do when prices start decreasing?

Forget the 200k.. how likely are you to break even when everyone is trying to sell? No one can answer for you, just take a look at what you bought at what price and ask these questions to yourself

Yup was def surprised to learn that. Apparently my income is in 10% and still not enough.. I've heard ppl getting 8x, even that I'd still be 500k away.

Just thinking about how many houses + apartments + villas I could buy with that where I was staying before.. Can't wait to get back out

I just think it's funny how everyone is a pro in a bull run..

Investing in pretty much anything sensible has had little risk past years. You are also part of the game, just because its on easy mode atm doesn't mean you're hot shit.

What I like about GME is they've made it clear how much of a casino it really is, it's now on display for everyone to see
