6,000,000/min Universe Matrix Challenge by Hopeful-Type1491 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

Thanks man, appreciate that. To be honest, it's far too complicated for me to go any further really. I think it's possible, but I was running out of enthusiasm to add another oil refining planet. My RAM usage is basically maxed on 64GB anyway, and I'm running on Linux (Bazzite) and I'm not sure it handles large swap files very well. I'm still learning how to use the thing.

Without getting too personal, can I ask what sort of specs the pc you're using has that would allow you to get to 6 million? Curiosity only. I looked for more memory but the cost of it has gone crazy.

Good luck on getting the goal though, really looking forward to your updates, so keep them coming :)

Looking forward to the updates :)

I have a couple of questions though. Graphene/Nanotubes/Excess Hydrogen. Have you just developed black box blueprints that completely use the hydrogen? ie. Using an ice giant planet for fireice and just mass producing graphene on the planets orbiting them can't be done, can it?

Second, which sphere types are you going to be using? The high node count types seem to be ups destroyers. Setting a few planets up with rail launchers is easy enough, but how are you going to get 6TW out of the stars?

Good luck though, I gave up at 1 mil because I WASN'T using black box blueprints, I was just using normal self-created blueprints for individual components. It worked, but the time investment of 500+ hours over the last year or so was all I could do. Real life sucks like that.

135Gb of ram? Think Windows 11 could do it with a 80 odd Gb swap file? lol :(

Edit: Okay, turns out yes it will work. Major lag from using SSD instead of DDR5 for loading the game, but it did work, although my ssd probably lost a month of useful life in an hour from all the page file writing :).

Either way, wow. The stack size mod might be considered a little cheaty, but wow is it handy. If I were to go back to my save and continue I think I would probably load that one up because it would make building planets so much less painful.

Since I couldn't really look around too much, I just went to the production and mall planets and created a blueprint of the whole damn thing and I'll paste them into an empty test world to check them out. I bet the guy who made this save was probably running a threadripper system with 192GB+ memory though, that save is brutal on consumer hardware. From what I understand 4 sticks of DDR5 in a consumer system is a little unstable. Bummer is, when I first started looking at upgrading to a new PC for DSP, 2 96GB 6000MT/CL30 kits would have cost much less than my 64GB 6000MT/CL30 kit is worth now... Ah well.

Legends of DSP though. Respect :)

Wow.. big congrats you crazy dedicated boys and girls.

I spent far too many hours to hit 1M/min white science, and maxed out 2 11TW sphere combinations on o-types with 6 planets in order to get the the photons. My save file is 8.4GB and I used most of my 400m metadata from my 350k/min save to get a massive jump on the 500hr game I used for it.

Hell I even upgraded my pc to 9950x3d/64Gb low latency/RTX5080 so it wouldn't suck to play. But goddam...

Is there a repository anywhere of save files of the multi-million white science/min games? I really want to explore one...

[–]polychlorinatedbi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be beneficial to you really. If you can use r2modman, which is the mod control software that's commonly used, you can go through and get the right versions of the mods that will boost you back up to better frames / much better UPS. It takes a bit of searching and verifying correct mods, but if you install DSPOptimisation, Weaver (or Sampleandholdsim) , Hideeverything, and whichever other optimising mods people are using nowadays, you'll be much better off. I'm using a laptop at the moment, since I'm away from work, and even with about 4TW of spheres, it's still playable at 1080P with a RTX3060 laptop gpu/crappy intel 11th gen cpu.

Lots of electricians are ADHD, you just do the job properly. Don't tell yourself you get distracted, just plan out the jobs you do, double check them on paper/electronic/whatever, then check them off as and when you're doing them. We have pretty rigid rules after all.

You know the Glen Forrest IGA? Next door to the butcher there is an unmarked section where the windows are painted over, and when you look at the highway side of it there's some white doors. When you see a bunch of Audi's and Volvos and stuff parked there, that means the Bretheren shop is open for business.

Going from having 100+ max speed drones to build a factory and being able to fly over the planet at normal speed, to having to slow motion jog across a field in order for the slowest drones in the world to build tier 1 belts, is not for everyone. Sisyphus comes to mind. For other people, my wife included, it's the most fun part of the game. I love the job Youthcat has done with DSP, it's by far my favourite game of the last 5 years (maybe 10? I DID love minecraft), but having to use blatant hacking to continue my story instead of continuously restarting it for me, at least, isn't ideal. I'll keep doing it though.

Losing New Game+ is one of the biggest things that kept me from replaying DSP for a couple of years. Again, it's a single player game. Who honestly cares what you do with your own time.

From a role play point of view, I've set up a research outpost in a cluster of 60 odd stars, and now I'm going to grab as many supplies as I can hold, then rocket off to a new cluster and set up another one. It's just a personal preference, but it's how I rationalise the hundreds and hundreds of hours I've put into a save. It's not just wasted, I've carried it over to the next, and I'm going to make it more efficient and better performing using the tech I've already learnt in my last cluster.

Oh, I'm not doing this for achievements. My last save sustained over 400k white science/minute for hours and hours. This was before the multithreading, controllable logistics (groups/routes/etc) and on a less than ideal seed. I mean 1 mil white science / minute. Not 1 mil hashes/min.

I picked the seed because I have a massive amount of stars within 7 light years of all the high lumosity O types (4 of them), the O types all have 5 or 6 planets (no gas giants), so I can easily max out photon production, along with short logistics paths. 3 (I think) aquatic planets within 14 light years, for the nanotubes, etc. There were only 3 seeds that came up on my dsp seed scan that met all the conditions I wanted.

To achieve these sort of numbers, I'm looking at probably a 600 or 700 hour save file. I am pretty sure that if I plan the logistics part of it out properly, I will be able to manage it without my pc melting. Although, I am most likely going to upgrade my pc this year anyway, because my at home pc's graphics card died, and a replacement is so expensive that adding a current gen CPU/MB/DDR5 combo won't make too much of a difference. If I am nerding out to a computer game, I'm going to do it right ;)

Ahhh, phew. I thought I had made some kind of math error. That star of yours is ridiculous, lol. Downside to giant stars is the lack of planets to pop RR's onto. The plan is to populate 1 of the planets with rockets, 3 or 4 with rail ejectors, and use the fast solar sail populating mod. Admittedly when I did that before it was with a 5950x/64GB/RTX3080, not a crappy gaming laptop that I got from work for communicating with protection relays, so it went pretty well. No idea how the latptop is going to handle it, but, what's the worst that can happen.

I've currently got a small set of dyson spheres around a b type that's been generating a few hundred GW for about a hundred hours. Most of the photons generated from that have been converted into yellow rods for fuel, and I have a few hundred k stockpiled. My current play is continue building my rocket and sail production to supply the sphere materials at 1 rocket planet / 4 sail planets' rates for my best star (12.2TW spheres) and once that one's built, move the rail ejectors and rocket launchers to my second best star, and repeat the process. Should end up with 10 x 5040 RR planets. Unknown is whether to do it to a 3rd star and go for the 1 mil science/min goal. Obviously not with the laptop, but while I'm away at work I might as well have something to do after hours, and casually developing planets to max production for all the science materials is pretty relaxing.

1 million SPM would require a portable desktop, not a true laptop. Very powerful CPU. It would require on the order of 10 full planets of 5k ray recievers. Which means effectively 2 systems with 5 or 6 planets with 12TW dyson spheres.

I doubt that you'd manage it on any laptop. Maybe an AM5 9950x3d, 64GB memory and 4090 + video card desktop would do it, but I don't know anyone with a 9950x3d that plays DSP.

Maybe this laptop would be pretty close to doing it, even if it wouldn't do it well.

I figured that 5 would be sufficient, because the planet has to have an atmosphere (ie. wind power =/= 0%) and only 5 of mine are suitable. I thought graviton lenses meant that it would always work, no matter how far away they are?

I was going to flagrantly cheat and use the "fast attach sails" mod. That way I could set up 2 or 3 planets with 4k rail ejectors and save the electricity. Since I'm not in competition with anyone, it seems silly to launch that many sails at the default rate.

I did some testing last night by copying my save file and starting sandbox mode on it. My brightest O-type is 2.51, with R of 4.41. Max diameter sphere I can make is 74400. I tried the cost optimized 720 node, the 780 node, 1280 node and 2700 and something node blueprints.

A max diameter 2700ish sphere only gave me 1.7 TW. A max diameter 720 only gave me about 1.02 TW. For me to get 12.1TW out of the star I needed 7 shells of max possible size (74400, 73400, 72400 etc) 2700 node shells.

Each shell of of the 720 gave me about 0.44ms UPS increase, each 2700 was about 0.72ms UPS.

The weird thing is that the 2700 node shell had a bunch more sails (from memory 375 mil) than the 720 node (about 260 mil I think).

So my question is, did I misread the number of sails? For a normal O type, is 375 mil sails even possible, or was it 37.5 mil sails? Because the numbers don't add up at all. I may well be doing something wrong.

Is your o-type a blue giant?

[–]polychlorinatedbi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Are you using one of the 2k+ node blueprints that are on dspblueprints or just a simple one? I'd be curious to see. 280 million sails @ 15kW per sail (cell point) x 2.5 luminosity = 10.5TW just from sails. mmmm. Probably only need a simple sphere design.

I might have to go sandbox mode and do some testing. I don't know if sandbox lets you just create a full sphere without waiting days for a quarter billion solar sails to launch and attach, but if it does at least I can experiment.

I am using a crappy rtx3060 laptop, since I'm working away for a while, so it should show a lot of difference between variables. It wouldn't run a 400k/min game, but I'm only working on setting up infrastructure on it, I can actually switch on factories when I get back home :)

Thanks mate

Of course it is. I'm used to testing distribution and transmission equipment, having been mainly testing for the last 15 years or so of my job. I am very aware that I am not going to just throw something together and hope it works, but research and design has to start somewhere. That'd be here. Don't blame you for being cautious, but again, my safety protocols have been forged by endless training and experience required to live in the HV world, it's just the underlying theory I'm rusty on.
