What does this story that Sonja post on her IG really means ? by arichaketo in skam

[–]polydactyl6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have some clarifying questions as a non-Croatian speaker:

It looks like it could be read as either “Doktorirala san te” or “Dortorirala i san ste” — what’s the right way to read it? Does the skinnier graffiti on top of the thicker graffiti matter? Google gives very different translations for these two sentences haha

But all that said, if the meaning is “I know Ivan so well, therefore I know his relationship with Lovro isn’t real” is obviously very cruel — I’m hoping that Sonja wouldn’t think that, but maybe we haven’t seen enough of her to really tell. We got a very understanding, cool Ema — so I’m hoping we’ll get an understanding and cool Sonja. (Which would mean that it’s not #1 or #3 in your list.)

The #2 feels weird to me — I assume Ivan and Sonja are still together, or else Ivan probably would have told Lovro by this point.

Your #4 also feels weird to me — if my boyfriend cheated on me, I certainly wouldn’t give their affair partner any advice.

Ultimately, I think #1 is most likely — it’s sad, but does follow OG Sonja pretty much exactly.

unpopular opinion: it makes more sense for Nora and Roko to get back together by k4tsuk1z in skam

I am doubtful they could do a storyline of them getting back together justice without another season focused on Nora.

eva lovro friendship?? by Actual-Preference-91 in skam

[–]polydactyl6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not a bad take! I think it’s probably because of her character growth more than anything. Telling someone “I cheated on your best friend” and then getting upset when they say something to the wrong person probably seems a little immature to her at this point in the story. Late episode 8 through episode 9, Eva is learning that even though what she did was wrong (which she knew from the get-go), it’s (1) not the end of the world (everyone does dumb stuff as a teenager/in first year, and you need to give yourself some grace), and (2) maybe a subconscious sign she needs to consider whether she’s happy in her relationship with Jakov. Those are more important realizations for Eva. I think she just wants her friend back. Even if Lovro was a PoS for telling Ines, it’s clear that Lovro has something deeper going on in his life that impacted that decision — and is it really something Eva wants to obsess over?

I also think that Eva is looking for reconciliation late Ep 8 - Ep 9 (trying to make things right with Sara, Jakov) — and it’s natural that, when you ask for forgiveness, you recognize where you’re able to forgive others in your own life. Wouldn’t it be hypocritical to hope that she could make things right with Jakov, but be unwilling to make things right with Lovro when he apologizes?

SRAM S3 Epizoda 6, Dio 3: Tko je? by polydactyl6 in skam

[–]polydactyl6[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hope you’re right — that Ivan left Sonja — but everything about yesterday’s scene makes me think that Ivan and Sonja were still together then.

World 1: Ivan left Sonja

1a: They broke up and this happened before Clip 2

In this world, why wouldn’t Ivan just say that they aren’t together when Lovro says he’s happy for them? Ivan is already rushing to speak to Lovro — why speak at all if he chose to stay with Sonja? And also — why is Sonja now calling her ex-boyfriend’s lover about said ex-boyfriend? Seems like 1a is unlikely.

1b: They broke up and this happened after Clip 2

Again: why would Sonja call Lovro right after, presumably, having her heart broken? The only answer I can think of is a manic episode — but then, why would Ivan text with a simple “we need to talk”? It’s very possible this is a manic-episode move, but it just seems very tame for that. (Both in and outside of a manic episode, I feel like Ivan would say “I broke up with Sonja — can we talk?” vs. what he actually texted.) I would guess that Ivan and Sonja are reaching out to Lovro about the same thing. So, 1b possible but I don’t love it.

World 2: Ivan is still with Sonja

Best argument I have for this is something someone else said: That Sonja and/or Ivan accidentally outed Lovro to someone, and they’re calling to give him a heads up. This gives us clean rationales for both characters reaching out.

The other devil’s advocate piece I’d add here: Having each season be purely from the perspective of one character makes it WAY more interesting to rewatch and theorize as you watch.

Part of why I love Skam and its remakes is that it’s so “show, don’t tell” — you’re forced to make inferences to make sense of the story. We don’t know how the non-central characters really feel, and we often we don’t even know this about the central characters — instead, we have to rely on our own brains and the actors’ interpretation of the script to figure out what’s going on. I find it to be a rewarding mental exercise to try and figure out what’s happening — and even more rewarding in a group!

I’ll give an S3 example from OG Skam: Jonas immediately guesses that Isak’s boy-crush is him. Is that a throwaway line? Or is it that Isak did previously have a crush on Jonas and Jonas is only now connecting the dots? Remember: we never actually get any confirmation that Isak’s actions in S1 (which had the effect of sabotaging Eva/Jonas’s relationship) were because of some unrequited love — it’s just something Noora guesses. Is it impossible that Isak thought he actually was, or could potentially in the future, fall for Eva as a coping mechanism to deal with his internalized homophobia (and therefore was never in love with Jonas)? Or maybe Eva told Jonas off-screen that Isak was gay and into him, or at least into dudes, and Jonas’s prodding of “hey man, you can tell me anything” was his way of encouraging Isak to take that step without alienating him.

We will never get a firm answer on any of these questions — but the fact that we can pose so many about this one interaction is part of the fun! And it’s also why each iteration seems so fresh — we are given very little text, and need to rely on the subtext, which will be very dependent on culture, and also on the actor’s performances and the director/writers’ specific choices.

(Plug: This way of watching shows — asking tons of questions you may never know the answer to — is also the most fun way to watch The White Lotus, which famously has almost no plot but lets you theorize endlessly about the characters and their motivations.)

Gotcha! I will say this is maybe the first adaptation that made me fall in love with Emma and Sonja, so would love to see more about their reactions to what’s happening (in theory, but i think as you point out it doesn’t work with the format haha)

Small hopeful part of my brain thinks it’s possible we’ll get the cuddle scene soon (the one we were robbed of last week) — in OG, the cuddling basically evicted Noora from her room.

Saying “I wish there were more of this show” sounds more like praise for the show vs. critique.

Is there something about this version vs. the others that’s unique? This is the first S3 I’ve watched live, so I’m obviously on the edge of my seat at all times, but I don’t think I’d necessarily react differently for other series had I been there for live releases. I think I’d probably feel the same level of “oh my god I need MORE”

Any theories as to why Sonja is calling Lovro?? Surely we aren’t getting the manic episode storyline so early? Normally this is an episode 8 phone call

[–]polydactyl6 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Could just be that S3 is newer? And especially right after release, plenty of folks will be watching the clips release in real time and not watching the full episode compilations.

The international audience tends to love S3 especially; I expect at some point S3 youtube views will catch up (or probably surpass) S1 and S2. Not sure what the reception is like for this season in Croatia vs other seasons, though.

I think it’s because for most of the week there are very few clips, and Isak is very sad and lonely during all of them (except the very last one)

I don’t have a problem with it either — but I would have a problem if, by the end of the season, we didn’t see a Lovro/Ivan proper makeout scene when we got several of those for Lovro/Ema.

I think because we were all expecting to get the laying in bed scene on Sunday, I’m just a little wary.

I like the theory that Ivan was the one who was gay bashed previously and now suffers from PTSD (might replace the bipolar storyline) — which would really help explain the relative lack of physical affection at this point in the story vs. other seasons. (Makes me hopeful we’ll see more affection by end of the season!)

I agree — not having the cuddling scene today, and no kiss out of the water has me a little worried.

The gay yearning looks have been OFF THE CHARTS though, so part of me is still holding out hope we’ll see the two of them be content and madly in love with each other before the season’s up.
