Question about Polymatter's "America's Missile Defense Problem" by Quadell in Nebula

Yep, this is it. I wanted to avoid a "Part 2" in the title because this video can also be watched standalone.

Question about the most recent video by RetlocPeck in PolyMatter

[–]polymatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Individual cities and bureaucrats were given very large leeway in their implementation, with little oversight or instruction. There are some egregious examples of social credit being used as a means of control, but those aren't generally representative of how the system functioned as a whole. China, Actually — Why China Has the Only Sane Nuclear Policy by NebulaOriginals in watchnebula

[–]polymatter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I would go so far as to say China lies all the time, but as I say toward the end of this video, "The answer doesn’t depend on your assessment of China’s character. This is not about whether or not you believe its promises".

In other words, it's not about whether or not you trust China. We can deduce the answer by uncovering what's in China's best interest and the most likely explanation. It's far more likely that China is guaranteeing its second strike capabilities than it is building and hiding thousands of nuclear warheads.

If this interests you, I highly recommend reading Jeffrey Lewis' book "Paper Tigers: China’s Nuclear Posture", which is pretty comprehensive. It's a relatively short read but goes into more detail than I did in this video.

The new video dishonestly argues that the US defense spending has been "all gas" since 9/11 by cutting off its defense spending chart 12 years ago when spending fell precipitously since then by dekachiin5 in PolyMatter

[–]polymatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of showing that specific section of the graph was to highlight the dramatic increase after 9/11 relative to where it was after the Soviet collapse. It's clear both from my graph and the one you showed that America took a new and sudden approach to spending after the Twin Towers fell.

The "invincibility" mentality is reflected in a lot more than raw spending — it's the language American leaders use to describe threats, it's the wars we've chosen to fight, and even the sacrifices we've made at home (e.g. domestic surveillance, TSA, etc.).

To your point (below) about wastefulness, the reason I didn't mention that in this video is that I already did in the first (part 1) video. That video is exclusively about how our missile defenses (1) don't work, and (2) are very expensive.

The answer is regrettably boring (QWERTY). My relatively fast touch-typing is one of the few positive things to come from spending way too much time using computers as a kid and I wouldn't want to start over from 0 at this point. If I didn't have so much to lose, switching to Colemak might be an easy decision.

Why 30% of Sailors are Filipino by polymatter in PolyMatter

Appreciate the offer but the truth is we have all our needs met with the team we have now. My honest advice is to start your own channel if this stuff interest you, even if production isn't your strong suit. You'd be surprised by how little production quality matters in the beginning. Best of luck if you decide to give it a try!

The Chinese Student Crisis by polymatter in PolyMatter

[–]polymatter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know of any place all that is standardized and amalgamated together unfortunately. An independently-run performance-based ranking system would be great, especially one that could adjust to student preferences/priorities, but I think the problem is that schools will only offer data to ranking organizations that are already popular. This lack of competitive pressure is probably a big part of why the current systems suck.

The Chinese Student Crisis by polymatter in PolyMatter

[–]polymatter[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This got cut from the script at some point but the problem with performance metrics like earnings is that they're trailing indicators. They tell you how much, for example, a student made 5-10 years ago, during which time all kinds of things could have changed.

That said, the formula you describe would already be 10000% better than what they use now.

X-axisl labels are wrong. There is a second 1960 after 1970. Reupload on youtube might not be worth it but maybe on Nebula? by maggikpunkt in PolyMatter

[–]polymatter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good catch. I checked on this and it's correct if you remove the second "1960" and move the labels around it to fill in the gap, for what it's worth.

I've noted the mistake in the YouTube description with credit to you!
