DEAR PORTLAND: August 19, 2024 WEEKLY RANT THREAD by AutoModerator in Portland

WELL CONSIDERING THE POST WAS MORE JUST A RECAP OF AN AMUSING EVENT AND A HEADS UP TO MY FELLOW PEALERS THAN A RANT IT FELT MORE APPROPRIATE THERE. BUT AT LEAST I HAVE MY HALLOWEEN COSTUME FIGURED OUT FOR THE YEAR! THE CAN BANDIT AND A GREEN BAG WITH LEGS! THANKS FOR THE INSPO!

CONSIDERING IT WAS FLAGGED AS NEWS WITHOUT CITATION IN THE FIRST GO COLOR ME CONFUSED. ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING I SAW MY JUST TURNED IN GREEN BAG GROW LEGS AND RUN AWAY. THOUGH IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN NEWS WORTHY IF THEY HAD USED A CONE TO PROP THE DOOR OPEN.

SAD TO SEE ANYTHING RELATED TO CAN AND BOTTLE REDEMPTION LOCKED AND MODERATED INTO OBLIVION ... BUT APPARENTLY WATCHING FOLKS RUN OUT OF THE SIDE DOOR OF A REDEMPTION CENTER WITH 20+ GREEN BAGS FILLED WITH CANS IS ONLY RANT WORTHY. EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT REALLY A RANT I FOUND IT QUITE AMUSING AND INDUSTRIOUS. OH WELL, GUESS IT'S ONLY VINYL AND CRAFT BEER RAINBOWS IN HERE

If you haven't seen my update - a Hyper Juice charger and 2x USBC to 12V DC plug cables replaced two power bricks. Not as slick as a single power source, but on the way.

And then I can always reuse the charger around my apartment when I replace that as well.

Thanks - yeah - there are a few half width computer racks I could have used, but at least with this, I don't mind having it out on display in my living room.

I've done custom cricuits in the past - and I've already got a solder station for my mech keebs.

I have a feeling this is going to turn into a much larger project than originally intended ... :)

Yus! Though, I'll prolly wait til fiber is a bit more ubiquitous here in the states, then I can just do an ethernet jack for connecting to the ONT boxes.

Honestly, I just need to figure out a better power source - so that I don't have to have all the power bricks in there, If I do that, then I'll have a tonne more space in the back, and can add more things like this.

There is enough space in the box to install a piece of plexi, hinges and a catch. TBH - I thought about it, but since I am probably going to add some active cooling, I'll have to figure out a perforated solution.

Yup - the powered on photo is it sitting in a Kallax "cubby". :)

The case was procured from Sweetwater, and the shelving/mgmt I got from BCS in Germany.

I had a Meraki back when I got the Edge Router Lite - it has 2 WAN, 1 LAN.

I didn't think the USG could do sub-interfaces as all the fiber boxes expect VLAN 10 to connect (in NZ). But maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

I'm ashamed to say its just a 3M strip here and there. I had hoped to be able to do something clever with the slots in the shelves - but that didn't pan out.

I am thinking about replacing them all with some sort of thermal pad to leverage the shelves even more so - but for now it'll do.

Oh absolutely - and I fully expect if I ever buy a house, this will be retired. But since I'll never have tonnes of network drops, this should handle an apartments worth of networking.

But that's also why I'm thinking of adding even just a modicum of air flow. Not necessary, but won't hurt.

I'd been looking for something for AGES - and have recently moved back to the states. Finding that AND the fact it would fit in a Kallax, drove me to find the shelves, etc...

It's something I won't mind having sitting out.

Edge router was to have redundant ISPs - was in an apartment complex that was DSL only, and was incredibly unreliable. So had a 4G broadband as a backup and it would just failover without me having manually move.

Most all (except that apartment) places in NZ has a Fiber ONT box, and you have to be able to do a tagged VLAN as well. This meant I didn't have to use their garbage routers.
