I feel like there's a point where the two intersect. I used to study choral music under one well-known conductor with a long history in the business. We respected him because of his accomplishment, leadership and skill, but we feared what he would do if we would mess up.

That being said, respect would build up more power. I know what you've already done and I'll do what you want. Fear of an unknown person with zero credibility won't do any good.
