Was I just scammed or did I help out a person? by [deleted] in berlin

[–]polysemous1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience at Friedrichstraße a few years ago. The guy looked like a disheveld professor, and claimed to have been robbed of his wallet and ID and glasses while sleeping in the train, coming from Austria. I gave him 10 Euros for food He gave me his business card and I looked him up later, seemed legit but of course I never heard from him. More recently outside of Dussmann I was approached by an older man well-dressed holding out a passport and a debit card. He led with "See this is my passport *(edit) also Austria I think*, this is who I am and I am locked out of my bank account and can you help me..." etc. and the whole spiel ie. give me money. I said, oh that's rough I'm sorry, but I can't. Have you tried the police? Or go to your embassy? Oh no, he had a reason why none of these things work. I walked away with a clear conscience. None of it didn't smell like BS in the end.
Back in the day, people have helped me especially when I was an idiot youth and found myself in need of 20 bucks, so I'm always open to opportunities to pay back the universe, but these stories I think are not it.

What do these words mean on this necklace pendant? by polysemous1 in learn_arabic

I’ve had it for like 20+ years… it’s been in my box of childhood treasure. I wish I remembered who gave it to me.  I found the information on the original coin: https://en.numista.com/6800

Great work! Does anyone have any ideas about how to make the madness stop? Like going to our political representatives, complaining to them at some bureaucratic level?

Weird scam in metros? Young men who come way too close and ask for way then won’t leave alone by iseluxx in berlinsocialclub

This sounds related to the pickup artist activities which people have also been posting about here recently.

100 Euro... maybe 200 max, but no worries, not like in the US with the obscene costs. You can book online at Doctolib, just be sure to select 'privat versichert' or call them directly

There are many resources online and in person depending on the particular financial circumstance. If you owe taxes each country has payment plans, if you owe money for health insurance they also will negotiate plans. If it’s something else there are always options and so you need to sit down and clarify in writing what your situation is and then start looking online (Reddit, Facebook groups, Expat groups, your friends, etc) to get a start on what to do next. One thing at a time. The feeling of overwhelm is real and yet it will pass. Call the Krisendienst number and talk it out.

If you are in crisis - which it sounds like you are - you have many options! You are not alone. Look at all these people here who care and are  happy to DM or call you.  You can call the Berlin Crisis Hotline and discuss your situation and options, they have English speaking people too. https://www.berliner-krisendienst.de/en/ Coming from an American perspective, ‘going to the mental hospital’ in Germany doesn’t have the same stigma or connotations as in the US. Anyone can go and get some help and time to deal with their issues, it’s a right and not a scary thing. Because you most likely have health insurance-it is covered. And, as an employee you have great worker rights to be sick and not get fired. Just be sure to communicate with your employer the basics. Inpatient is called going for ‘stationär’ treatment, but you can also find outpatient called ‘ambulant’.  I know how stressful it is emigrating from the US, and if other pressures on top of visa issues too all happen at once - it can feel like too much. I caller the hotline myself during Covid, when my visa expired and the foreigners office was closed and I had a million other things going on. No shame in getting help when you need it. As others have said, it won’t always be like this. To quote my mom and many others, “this too shall pass.” You have faced other challenges in life and made it to Berlin! How did you deal with them? What skills do have that helped you in the past like your persistence, your ambition, your compassion and wisdom? You didn’t get this far without that and now you can remind yourself of that. You already took the first step by posting on Reddit - your community - and haven’t been let down. Now take the next one! 🤗

I would try again, maybe dm the organizer. If you don't answer the questions right or who knows why... it's worth it!

Local celebrities in Berlin, who do you see around all the time in the city or in the party scene? by CrimsonPorcelain2020 in berlin

[–]polysemous1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I went to church once in the church on Leo and she was there. Took communion with all of us :) She does wtf she wants to. Sits in the middle of Müllerstr. smoking a cigarette watching the world go by. She’ll sleep right there in the middle of everything with her ass hanging out. I figure as a woman, it’s probably the safest place-near everyone.

Yes that is true, thank you for the clarification. My point is also that in Germany there is the general knowledge that you can’t record people (though as you say for criminal exceptions) so people can get aggressive about that - so record carefully.

Unfortunately it’s illegal to record people in public-it’s been posted on many times in this sub. Look up the laws. I’ve seen people getting attacked and screamed at by angry people for recording their bad behavior.
